There was a great Criterion sales day last December, the week of Christmas I believe - at that point I didn't know many Criterion movies, but they offered a different movie every hour.

Got around to watching the new Ozu films on Hulu, and I think The Flavor of Green Tea Over Rice would make a great blu-ray release. I did enjoy The Brothers and Sisters of the Toda Family as well, particularly the following scene:

So much wisdom, Ozu

They will also still randomly have some titles at closer to their normal price, not on sale at all.
That's right, they often fall close to the 'regular' sales. I recall a couple of titles priced at $17.49 last time, though it's really odd how they choose the prices on them...feels very random.

Got my copy of 'Chungking Express' from Amazon. It was actually from Amazon and not a third party seller, and was advertised as brand new, but it was open. Everything appears to be fine, but it's annoying to get an opened item.

I would agree...I signed up for a Hulu Plus trial last week and I finally got to watch The Flavour of Green Tea Over Rice. I had expected it to resemble more of his pre-war films, but it's more like his later B & W films. It uses most of his traditional "fixed camera" perpsective...but there are a few shots that are atypical. Panning shots and those wonderful shots on the train.

There's also a large number of Naruse films that I haven't seen that aren't available on disc. I hope that we see at least another Naruse Eclipse set, but I'll take a blu release from either CC and/or our UK equivalents (BFI or MoC).

I had pretty much had my dream film related travel day today. Paid my respects to Ozu's grave, paid my respects to Kurasawa's grave, had drinks at New York Bar in the Park Hyatt in Tokyo, followed by drinks at La Jetee.

I shall sleep well tonight.

Anyone have any guesses for the next Ozu blu released by Criterion?

I'll have to check out World on a Wire and 39 Steps as soon as I can, since they're blind buys, but since I'm on a horror movie kick these days, I might have to wait until November.

By then, I'll probably be wondering what to order for the B&N sale.

...seriously, what should I order? I'm running out of ideas.
good 4 you ! ok. CC makes only R1 or RA discs, but they dont even ship to Europe (Finland) I had my shopping cart full and then : where you wanna ship : Us or Canada. ok. CC fans do not exist elsewhere. our money is no good.

If it is an upgrade, I'd really like to see Early Summer. It is my favorite Ozu film. I just loved the bickering between the married women and the unmarried women. However, like I mentioned last page, I'd really like to see a blu-ray release of Flavor of Green Tea Over Rice more than any upgrade.

Not unless it has the lost 85 mins.

BTW, That name is too close to a comic book that I don't care for. I'll keep the cult movie name.

So what do you all do with your old cardboard cases when you receive replacements?

Has anyone else noticed Criterion's "House of Games" tweets over the last few days?
I guess that's another upgrade identified.

I could live with that - in fact, I'd likely be pretty happy with it - and elsewhere on the Mamet front I would love for them to somehow get hold of Glengarry Glen Ross.

I know that doesn't quite fit with their director-centric vision (he wrote both the original play and the screenplay but didn't direct the film) but Mamet is a much better writer than director and his rhythmic dialogue is pretty much his main claim to fame anyway.

They might not ship to Europe but Criterion were happy to exchange my faulty Carlos/3 Colors White disc and I'm in the UK. Much respect to them for that.

This place does regular Criterion sales and ships pretty much anywhere. Contact them directly for a shipping price for one disc but $17 for 8 is pretty good when you break it down and I usually buy 8 at a time.

I stacked them up on an empty shelf for now. I doubt I can ever bring myself to get rid of them. They have more artwork on them than the replacements do. If, for any reason, I have to sell one of the films, I'm sure a buyer will appreciate (read, pay more for) both cases.

Part of me did not want to swap out Marienbad. That cardboard case is actually pretty nice, and its cover/spine did not transfer well to the replacement cover. And the gigantic booklet might be under a bit too much stress in the plastic case.
