Kaizō Hayashi boxset being announced Monday!
From TWF's teasers the last couple days we know it includes: The Most Terrible Time in My Life (1993) Trap (1996) and presumably The Stairway to the Distant Past (1995), as these three films apparently form the "Mike Hama Private Eye trilogy" which was released by Kino on DVD once upon a time twenty years ago. I am only familiar with this director from his debut To Sleep So as To Dream (1986), released by Arrow. Should be a cool discovery. New TWF boxset is always exciting! |

I expect it to be the Maiku Hama trilogy only given what we know so far and known restorations available. Would also love to see Circus Boys but unsure if there's a newer master than the 2002 DVD, which would likely be a barrier unless Third Window can co-ordinate a restoration.

Never heard of them! Can't say the trailer excited me much but I dare say I'll get it.
£49.99 is pushing it though. |

The Hama films are phenomenal, each one gets increasingly more left-field and bizarre (reaching almost Suzuki-ian levels of neo-pop abstraction) as they go. Nagase is on top-form and we even get bit parts from Tsukamoto and Joe Shishido (playing himself!). The old DVDs they released of this were dogshit, so this is a massively warranted upgrade and I'd be more than happy to put my money behind the set if it meant other Hayashi films joining it and the similarly dreamlike To Sleep So As To Dream - esp. Circus Boys, which the ICA had a lush 16mm print of until recently.

I wasn't familiar with the trilogy, but I liked the film noir influences in the trailer. And then it hit me when I read the name out loud...Maiku Hama..Mike Hammer.. That's awesome.

Watched Postman Blues last night, directed by Sabu of Dangan Runner fame, it was tremendous.
