The Madman Blu-rays contain LPCM 2.0 for both Japanese and English across all Sailor Moon releases, so there should be no discernible difference as LPCM is a lossless format. The fact that the films are so short also gives them no excuse not to use LPCM.

Yes. All releases that I have encountered so far have had these as well as chapter points after each so that they can be skipped. A play all option is also included.

I’ve had the first three sets on Blu-ray for years, but I just ordered Vol. 4 (R part 2) on DVD. Call me sacrilegious, but I just can’t justify spending so much on bad/mediocre upscales and some voice actor interviews. I just want the show and am happy to be continuing my collection while I can. I got a good deal on it too ($14 new on eBay). I’ll double dip if a proper remaster ever surfaces. I’ll still get the movies and Crystal on Blu-ray (I already have the R movie and it looks gorgeous).

I know you’re hesitant go region free, but both the Australian BD and DVD sets of the first three seasons look miles better than the equivalent VIZ product.

I believe you, but it’s just so much easier for me to get the Viz discs. Plus neither presentation is totally ideal because they’re both SD. I just want the show. If their Blu-rays were new native HD transfers, I would consider going with them.

Can someone clear up which Australian Madman DVD releases use the Italian Dynit masters? Are these still available to buy or have they replaced them with downscales of the Toei "HD Upscales"?

Seasons 1-3 DVD: Italian masters
Seasons 4-5 DVD: Toei HD masters downscaled to SD
Seasons 1-5 Blu-ray: Toei's HD masters

Due to the apparent licensing freeze, some releases may be unavailable at the moment.

OK, thanks for confirming. I wasn't sure if they redid seasons 1-3 after switching over to the newer masters.

Can I confirm that these are the ones I want?

Season 1

Season 2

Season 3

Madman almost if not always just repackages existing discs for complete sets such as these. Seasons 1-3 use the Italian masters as these were released before Madman procured Toei's HD masters.

Madman has updated their releases for September 2020, and there are no updates on the status of Sailor Moon.

Madman have started responding on Twitter about it so it fills me with some hope. As I posted a while back, it is a licensing issue and they claim they are still negotiating a resolution.

I've seen similar posts by Madman via social media a few weeks ago.

It gives me a bit of hope, but I really just want them to be able to release it ASAP as I absolutely dread the idea of having waited for all these years only to be deprived of the final episodes.

Most likely, but I hope they premier it in theaters around the same time as Japan gets it.

The Japanese theatrical release of the films were pushed back to January 8, 2021 for Part One and February 11, 2021 for Part Two due to COVID-19. I think it's going to be awhile before we hear anything substantial on a US release (theatrical or otherwise.)

Even if Viz has lost the rights, keep in mind the series was actually redubbed by Studiopolis, so if the new licensor chooses to use them again, they would have all or most of the same VAs without Viz. Likewise with the 90s version, DiC, Cloverway and Pioneer didn't have all that much input, the dubs were all produced by Optimum Productions.

If any studio got the new movies over Viz they would be utter dumbasses to not use the English dub case we have. Not only would it break continuity, but I would refuse to watch them then. Sheh and gang are the ONLY English voices I will ever except from Sailor Moon from this point on. The only exception is if someone dies.

Reminds me when Funimation took over Initial D from Tokyo Pop and instead of bringing back the original voice actors they decided to use there own and it ruined the experience.

Hate when that happens.
