A few Anime use "pre-recording/pre-scoring" in lieu of the Japanese standard practice of recording/dubbing dialogue to work in progress or completed animation. Isao Takahata's Only Yesterday and The Tale of the Princess Kaguya are examples (although those are feature films). I know recently the TV series "The Day I Became a God" was pre-recorded/pre-scored.

The best known example of プレスコ (pre-scoring) is Akira, as I’m sure everyone is aware. (I hope… it’s very common knowledge) Originally it was intended only for closeups and アフレコ (after-recording; after animation) for everything else, but it was decided that the whole film would be pre-scored due to there being so much of it already.

I think my preference comes down to more of a variation on this. I'm VERY used to awkward and ill-suited english dubs from the fact that I would frequently watch dozens of old Godzilla tapes as a child, almost like an addiction. If at first a voice seems like an odd fit for the character it's being dubbed over, I can usually get used to it in minutes.

In the case of Neon Genesis, I heard the Netflix dub first, but having now watched a couple of the old ADV DVDs (I found a couple of separate volumes of the show recently at a used book store), I've enjoyed what I heard of the ADV dub more. Sure, it's hammy and the voices aren't the best fit for the character models, but the lines themselves are less awkward and the over-the-top performances do have a delightful charm to them.

Still less annoying than the ADV dub debate, which takes place daily.

Jokes aside, I'm genuinely amazed by the amount of people who watch Eva dubbed. I had no idea it was this prominent.

So many people talking about the dubs and/or subs, while all I wanted to do was share another avenue to get a great deal for the series when it popped up. My bad peeps...

So far all I see is people posting that they're getting the CE for the ADV dub, but is there anyone else than me getting it for the subs?

Aside from the Love/Like and Children/Child debate, there seems to be quite a few other questionable instances in the Nexflix subs. They don't seem dreadful by any means, but might make the viewing less immersing? Though not sure if it warrants the price difference.

It’s debates like this that make me question myself and feel like I’m less of a person because I prefer to watch a few of my animoos dubbed, whether it be for nostalgia or something else… I’m sorry, okay! :’( smh

I'm getting the CE even with the intention of only watching with subs (and maybe occasionally revisiting the Netflix dub), mainly because I like the packaging. I don't find the Netflix subtitles nearly as problematic as others, personally, so the ADV subs' inclusion doesn't do much for me other than having archival value.

Feel no shame in watching anime dubbed. I always try to watch anime dubbed.

Dubbed and Subtitled both have their positives. I think a good dub allows for better immersion than subtitles.

I honestly can't imagine why you would care a whit what others think in this regard?

The thing that irritates me about it is, I actually think there's a fun conversation to be had about certain dubs and subs, different translations and the way they localize the script...like an actual fun conversation...

But instead people are so condescending about it lol. Personally, that's what disappoints me. Absolutely couldn't care less if people think that the things I like are terrible.

What's the Amazon dub?
There's 3 english dubs now?
Its the Rebuild movies that are playing on Amazon prime. They got redubbed, so this is the second time for 1-2 and 3rd for 3.33 (if you include the theatrical version). A few of the cast are the same as the original Funimation group, but most of the parts got recast. The new dubs in general are pretty atrocious courtesy of Khara's preferred translator Dan Kanemitsu. I made a few quick comparisons between the Amazon and Funi dubs in the "What Anime have you finished?" thread if your curious.

Eva 1.11
Eva 2.22
Eva 3.33

Nothing strange about that-if a series is dubbed that's how I watch it. But I really don't want to get started on the not so great sub vs. dub controversy. My motto is dubs forever-period.

For me it's like watching people eat Sirloin with ketchup. I don't get how people can claim they love french or italian films or anime and watch them dubbed. Language is such an integral part of a film, I just don't get it. Also, it's not controversial, if you watch a foreign work dubbed to your language then you are missing out and I'm too neurotic to not point it out from time to time.
