I've seen it twice (dvd and again on blu) and I thought it lived up to the hype-- very intense and involving. It rates 5 stars for me and it's among the best war movies

[QUOTE=jhiggy23;2905838]District 9.

Film: 3 stars (out of 4)

PQ: 4.5 stars (out of 5)

AQ: 5 stars (out of 5)

Good film that's really only good because of its obvious allegory. If it were not for that, it wouldn't be a good film. But then again, that was the entire intention of the film.

I really didn't care about any characters or what happened. The first hour was very mediocre, but the last hour was entertaining enough. I particularly like the last shot of the film. So, a good movie but nothing more. Certainly not of best picture nominee quality, ten films or not. Avatar, while also not a best picture quality film, was a much better film.

I agree as well-- this was something of a disappointment for me-- there were some very good scenes in the 2nd half but overall it was no more than a good movie-- I need to watch it again sometime down the road and see if I was missing something!

I agree. I mean, I enjoyed the way it was filmed and I thought the last hour was entertaining, but come one--best picture nominee???? There are innumerable films each year that have action like that. It was a good film but it's attention and acclaim is 100% due to its blatant allegory.

I think documentaries are the one category of film that will never win best picture, but you mean to tell me, Academy, that District 9 is better than The Cove? Or any of the foreign films?

This is one of the reasons why 10 nominees is so frustrating. You have a film like District 9 going down in history as a best picture nominee, but a film like Hotel Rwanda, just to name one example, not being a nominee. That to me is embarassing and is just one of the many reasons why I personally think 10 nominees is shameful. Marginal films are not deserving of that accolade.

I have to admit, I was pleasantly surprised when I saw Constantine a couple years back. I thought it would be terrible, but it was actually pretty entertaining. Certainly not a great film, but good enough.

Czar! How on Earth can you disrespect the greatest historical epic ever captured on film? It's realism is beyond question.

Just the acting alone puts it far beyond perceived "classics" such as Citizen Kane and Gone With the Wind. Nevermind the brilliant sets, costumes, make-up and hair.

The histoical accuracy and relevance to todays sociatal and economic troubles are mindboggling and visionary.

It will be another 40 to 60 years before someone makes a film as important as 10,000 BC.

I personally LIKE that there are 10 nominee's! Look at the last couple of years of the Academy Awards....USUALLY the best picture nominee's are films that made under $30 million at the box office! Meaning not many people even saw them!!! Now at least they added some movies that people actually went to SEE!!!! I mean you & I both know that District 9 has LITTLE chance to win for best picture...but it's nice to see movies like District 9, Up,
Inglourious Basterds, etc. to get nominated instead of the usual "Artsy" films.

So far of the films I've seen from last year (mind you I haven't seen many so my opinion means very little), The Cove is far and away the best. I still have many to see, with Moon, The Hurt Locker, and A Single Man (not a Serious Man--dislike the Coen brothers) being my top three to see. I find it hard to believe that any film will exceed The Cove, which is a lock for best documentary, and is arguably the best documentary ever made.
Another HUGE Those guys make magic most of the time? Really? They have a couple of weakies, but... but... REALLY?

500 Days of Summer, for the third time driving to work on Friday. I love this movie and give it a super high 9.5 because of the replay factor. I love the story, characters, and I do love me some Zooey!

A little less entertaining than I had hoped, but all in all, ok.

Rob Zombie's Halloween 2

2/10

Absolutely awful film. Really silly film that is ruined by Michael's grunting and talking. Also, the beard?? WTF!!!!!!!!! What were they thinking when they decided that not only would Michael become a travelling tramp but also hardly wear the bloody mask. A stupid amount of violence that is completey unnecessary and just over the top.
Saving grace was the film-like transfer that was a joy to look at.

Couples Retreat.

Don't even bother with this one! It was boring, and all the therapy talk killed the pace of the movie. It had a few moments that were funny, but it was still disappointing with this great cast.
