Thanks to FastFish for the template and tips, plus advice from other forums, and I finally perfected the art of inside artwork with spine art.

Thanks to everyone for their help.

I apply the tape to the spine and trim off the excess, then I stick the artwork onto it so that its all neat and tidy before applying glue to both the plastic and the spine art. Some people prefer to use double-sided tape for that job also, but there doesn't seem to be any that have a clear finish. Most have various shades of yellow. Also using glue you can manouver the spine until you have it spot on.

Hope this helps.

I'd probably flip the image & zoom in a bit. I prefer this second img, but hey, that's what's nice about mod'g...you do what you like!

Double sided tape is brilliant! The one I picked up doesn't have the backing strip to remove so its a little bit fiddly to get on but it looks much better.

[Show spoiler]

looks great Orton! I have all the materials including double sided tape to do this, but my previous 2 attempts (on worthless steels) have both caused creases in the spines, so I'm hesitant to do it on any steels I actually care about

Thanks for the tips on how to get these steelbooks apart. I tried with my Scarface steelbook, just to see how tough it was, that way I was prepared when my Drive steelbook arrived. The Scarface one was pretty simple, but the Drive one proved to be more difficult, but only the right side. Now I just need to buy more steels

Okay, so I printed up some photos, and my printer has decided not to print the color red, so that messed up my photos, so just for a temp solution I printed the pictures in black and white, until I can buy a new printer, which brings me to my question.

Does anyone have any tips on what kind or type of printer I should look at, that will print excellent photos? My budget would be probably under $100. I take a a lot of photos that I want to print out and also I want to print out custom covers, and artwork and not worry about the quality. Thanks to anyone input.

How bad are the creases ? Normally you can bend them back into place very carefully. When I'm using my knife the spine will curve upwards when I get to the middle, so I stop and do the other side to meet in the middle, there's a small bend when I've finished but I gently apply some pressure to make it straight again. Unless you have totally butchered it. Take off all the residue glue off the metal spine and put it under a heavy weight to see if it goes back to original shape.

same problem i had on my first attempt (luckily it was only wolfman UK)

If you warm the glue up underneath the spine for about 30 - 40 seconds than slide a knife underneath the spine than it should just glide through. You will need to slowly slide the knife as you get to the end of the spine otherwise it will bend.

For warming up the spine i use a hair dryer or you can use a bowl of hot water.

Also not sure if this link has being posted before, i found it very useful. (Credit to Stuntastik30)

Great work mate, love the planet of the apes

Does anyone know if you can buy the plastic inside of the steelbook?

I had the same problem with the first two that I did, but thanks to a tip from a member on another forum, this is what I do now. The trick is to make sure that the glue on the spine is well and truly softened.

Bring a pan of water to the boil, then drop the temperature so that the water is just simmering. Remove the two outside covers from the SteelBook, then hold the spine side of the plastic case under the simmering water for 5 or 6 minutes (don't rest it on the bottom of the pan, hold it in the water). The spine should now just about fall off, but if it doesn't, use a thin card or blade, and gently saw from side to side and you wont have any creases in the spine.

Hope this helps

My first swing at custom artwork. I loved what everyone else was doing but I wanted something unique. The scorpion on his jacket really sets it off for me.

which i just changed to

Thanks for the tips and suggestions guys, I will definitely try those methods and see if I can do it creaseless, if so then I'm going to be really busy redoing my steelbooks

I've never tried warming the glue. Do you think holding it under the tap on the hottest for a couple of minutes would do ?

I really like your second one Che. Much better fluidity

^ You could try it, but the holding in simmering water for 5 or 6 minutes works brilliantly.

Now, off to work on my Wolfman Steelie.
