From what I've read today, he is a mild mannered guy and wasnt too fond of the stress. $3M must have terrified him from a responsibility perspective. Dont forget, a few short years ago he was coaching in High school. Offensive gru or not, if he doesnt want that pressure, this is a tremendous move for him and that crazy wife of his

He also took an also-ran QB in Jonathan Crompton and made him serviceable enough to get drafted into the NFL.

So, riddle me this... If UT fans were happy to see him go, then why did they riot, burn couches, paint expletives on a rock, threaten Kiffin's family with bodily harm, and generally act like a petulant, jilted girlfriend? Because they saw that he was a good coach and recruiter and were angry/frustrated that he was leaving, that's why.
You mean the same "Phat" Phil Fulmer that coached Tennessee to a 152-52, 8 bowl wins, a national title in his tenure? I always disliked UT thought he got a bum deal. He had 2 bad years in 17 seasons at UT. With regards to the way fans reacted I think they were just burned the way he talked a TON of junk in such a short period of time, making it sound like he was going to turn UT into some juggernaut only to sneak out of town like a thief. I think many fan base would be pissed about that. It certainly wasn't actual performance during that 7-6 season (worse than 15 of Fulmer's 17 seasons) that gave UT fans some hope of greatness. Probably more continuity than anything else. Tennessee had only 2 coaches in about 30 years prior to Kiffin. It's not like they were accustom to coaches packing their bags and sneaking out of town.

Maybe he will do big things at USC. I'm just not ready to call him a good coach, much less great after one good season as a head coach. Any idea what's going on with USC's 2012 class? Right now I'm seeing only 9 commitments, roughly half of what most top-tier schools have at this time. Probably just awaiting an answer from many recruits I suppose. Though of those 9 recruits nearly all are solid 4-5 stars.

How is this Kiffin's fault?

Wrong. He announced that he was leaving Tennessee IN KNOXVILLE and said that he had accepted the head coaching position at USC AFTER UT had played their bowl game, unlike so many coaches who resign and take new jobs. He also said that USC was the ONLY job he would leave UT for. Like a thief? What exactly did he steal?

Let's see how many Pitt fans burn couches over Graham's departure. He was there for less than Kiffin was at UT. I'll bet it will be more of a "don't let the door hit you in the ass on the way out" attitude in the Steel City.

Maybe. I have no idea why the UT AD fired Fulmer in the first place. However, obvious improvement could be seen with that team under Kiffin's watch, and sometimes, wins and losses don't reflect that improvement.

You do know that he's allowed to take only 15, right? The 2012 class will lack in quantity but will kill it in quality.

No, was that part of the probation terms? Looking at 2011 it appears they had a large 30 commitment class. Did this 15 signings thing just start for 2012? In any case I don't hate or even dislike USC. I remember rooting for them against Texas in that title game. Hopefully Kiffin will at least run a clean program that doesn't have to scrub any records he achieves from history.

The penalties against USC announced by ex-Miami AD, Paul (Fat F*ck Hypocrite) Dee in June 2010 was that USC:

1. had a 2-year bowl ban
2. could take a maximum of 15 scholarships (unlike the normal maximum of 25 scholarships) over three years with a cap on scholarship players during those three years at 75 (unlike the normal 85)
3. had to vacate the final two victories of 2004 and all of them in 2005
3. was on probation until June 2014

What USC did beautifully was to take an immediate hit on the bowl bans for 2010 and 2011 and appeal the scholarship reductions. While the scholarship reductions were being appealed, USC was able to take a full class in 2011 and max out the early enrollees (that counted toward the class of 2010), which as you noted was around 30 players. These players will be crucial in weathering the lean years of diminished scholarship players beginning with this (2012) class.

So the penalties are as follows:

2010, 2011 -- bowl bans
2012, 2013, 2014 -- scholarship reductions

Thus, by splitting the two harshest sanctions -- the bowl bans and the scholarship reductions -- and spreading them over 5 years, instead of concentrating them over 3 years like I'm sure the NCAA wanted, USC has been able to mitigate their punitive effect.

Ok, sounds like they played things pretty well to weather the storm. Given the good quantity of 5-star and high 4-star recruits USC always reels in I'm sure they'll maximize those 15 signings. Right now with 9 recruits for 2012 USC has the highest average star rating of any football team.

Has Barkley decided for sure he's going pro in 2012? Last I heard he was almost certainly. If he did return in 2012 USC would have to be a pre-season top-3, maybe #1. Even without him they'll probably be very high next year.

Athlon sports already put out a VERY early 2012 pre-season ranking prediction. LSU is #1, USC is #2. But apparently that's assuming Barkley and Kalil would return.

No one knows, but I'm not worried about it either way.

Nick Perry is the only junior, thus far, to hire an agent and declare for the NFL draft. The rest of the Trojan Family is waiting on juniors Matt Barkley, Matt Kalil, and T.J. McDonald.

I'm not sure how Chad's post was "uninformed" at all - it was rather astute. Kiffin's record at the Raiders was 4-12 and 1-3 before he was fired. He then went 7-6 at Tennessee (which record nearly cost my coach, Mark Richt, his job last year). So with a combined 12-21 record between the NFL and NCAA, he gets the job at USC.

All I know about Kiffin is that he was forced out from the Raiders, being called a disgrace and a liar; then embarrassed himself at UT before leaving them in the lurch after 1 year.

You think that people rioted because they thought Kiffin was the savior? Maybe that's partly true. I suspect, however, that they also rioted because they thought Kiffin screwed them over. Came in, talked a big game, stirred the pot, got a good recruiting class, then bolted for supposedly greener pastures.

I can already tell that NOTHING Kiffin does is wrong in your eyes, so this is really rather pointless. I wonder how your tune will change, though, when (not if) he screws over USC. All that said, I sincerely hope he can bring some class to that organization. His record this year given the probation terms, etc., is impressive.

Jerry Sandusky's legal team has added a new lawyer, and this one doesn't appear to be any smarter than his other lawyer. Karl Rominger, who recently joined Sandusky's legal team, gave this as possible reasoning for why Sandusky showered with you boys:
Quote:
"Some of these kids don't have basic hygiene skills. Teaching a person to shower at the age of 12 or 14 sounds strange to some people, but people who work with troubled youth will tell you there are a lot of juvenile delinquents and people who are dependent who have to be taught basic life skills, like how to put soap on their body

I heard Jim Rome talking about this today. It's a completely ridiculous explanation. The only kids over 10 who might not know how to shower are those with VERY severe disabilities. And those aren't the kind Sandusky dealt with. I don't get the strategy for either of his attorneys. Every time his lawyers go on national TV with some new ridiculous assertion they only make their client look worse. I guess they think they can somehow win the battle for public opinion, but it's never going to happen in a case like this.

They're just trying to make a reasonable doubt argument. Without a "smoking gun" or eyewitness testimony, it could be very difficult to prove the allegations. As we've seen with O.J. and Casey Anthony, jurors take these high-profile cases seriously insofar as they hold the prosecutions' feet to the fire and make them prove each element of the case.

That said, Sandusky should rot in hell.

Quote:
Harrisburg, Pennsylvania (CNN) -- A Pennsylvania judge ruled on Friday that the perjury case against two former Penn State university officials will go to trial over their role in a child sex abuse scandal involving former assistant football coach Jerry Sandusky.

Tim Curley, Penn State's former athletic director, and Gary Schultz, a university vice president who oversaw campus police, have been charged with perjury and failing to report an alleged 2002 sexual assault of a child.

The decision followed Friday's testimony of prosecutors' star witness in the case against Sandusky, who faces more than 50 counts involving sexual acts with 10 boys since 1994.

Mike McQueary testified that he told university officials that he saw Sandusky possibly sodomizing a boy in 2002, saying that what he saw was "extremely sexual in nature."

But during a court reading of Curley's earlier testimony, the former athletic director said he was not made aware of any sexual activity.

Curley, who after the alleged incident restricted Sandusky from using university property, said his decision was based on what was considered inappropriate but not sexual conduct.

He said he thought McQueary was just "uncomfortable with (Sandusky's) behavior and didn't think it was appropriate for Jerry to be in the showers with a young person."

But McQueary said, "There's no question in my mind that I conveyed to (university officials) that I saw Jerry with a boy in the shower and that it was severe sexual acts going on and that it was wrong and over the line."

Sandusky, meanwhile, has pleaded not guilty to all charges, while denying any sexual activity with his accusers. Regarding the 2002 incident in the showers, he has said that he and the boy were just "horsing around."

McQueary, a former Penn State quarterback, testified that he met with Curley and Schultz to inform them about the alleged incident about nine days after first alerting head coach Joe Paterno.

In a graphic description of the alleged events, McQueary testified that he walked into a locker room and heard someone in the shower.

He said he heard rhythmic, slapping sounds, like that of skin on skin.

"I looked in the mirror and shockingly and surprisingly saw Jerry with a boy in the shower," McQueary told the court.

He said Sandusky was behind the boy and the boy was up against a wall. He said he believes Sandusky was sexually molesting the boy, but he did not see insertion and did not hear protests. He said he believes the two were engaged in intercourse, but he could not be sure.

"They were as close as they could be," he added.

McQueary then said he looked away for a few moments, and when he took a closer look, the two were standing apart.

"They had turned so their bodies were both facing me. ... They looked directly in my eyes," he said. "Seeing that they were separated, I thought it was best that I leave the locker room."

He added that he felt "shocked" and "horrified" afterward.

"I was not thinking straight," he said, adding that he was "sure (the incident) was over" when he left.

But McQueary acknowledged he doesn't know what happened after leaving. He also testified that he never tried to find the boy.

McQueary, then a graduate assistant, said he called Paterno -- who was later fired in the wake of the scandal -- the morning after, telling him that he "saw Jerry with a young boy in the shower and it was extremely sexual in nature and I thought I needed to tell him about it."

McQueary testified that the former head coach was "shocked" and "saddened" on hearing the allegation.

"He said, 'I need to think and tell some people about it.' "

But McQueary didn't meet with university officials to explain what he saw until more than a week after first informing Paterno, he testified.

As far as McQueary knew, Paterno also never tried to find the boy, McQueary said. He added that he couldn't be certain whether he ever used the word "intercourse" when describing the alleged incident to university officials.

He further testified that he did not alert police, saying that he instead told Curley and Schultz.

"In my mind, that is the police," McQueary said. "I want to make that clear."

When pressed about why he went to university officials and not police, McQueary said it was "because it was delicate in nature and I tried to use my best judgment."

Sandusky, who was Penn State's defensive coordinator when he retired in 1998, met his accusers through a youth charity he founded, the Second Mile. According to prosecutors, he would hug, tickle and wrestle with the boys before allegedly crossing the line and sexually abusing them.

In November, the summary of a grand jury report was released contending that Sandusky sexually abused the boys in the basement of his home, hotel rooms, a high school wrestling room and -- based on McQueary's account -- the locker room for Penn State's football team.

Sandusky lawyer says comments misconstrued

Sandusky waived his right to a preliminary hearing Tuesday in Centre County, a two-hour drive from Harrisburg. From the courthouse's steps, his attorney, Joseph Amendola, took shots at McQueary's credibility during a long talk with reporters.

He suggested that had McQueary told Paterno, Curley and Schultz that he had seen Sandusky raping a boy in the showers, they would have done more than order him to stop bringing Second Mile children on campus.

"If we destroy McQueary's credibility, then we put the credibility of all others involved into question," Amendola told reporters.

In its report, the grand jury found that McQueary was a credible witness after hearing all the testimony.

According to the grand jury report, McQueary testified that, as he walked into the locker room, he saw the lights were on and heard the showers running.

As he put his sneakers into his locker, McQueary looked into the shower and saw a naked boy, about 10, "with his hands up against the wall being subjected to anal sex by a naked Sandusky," the report said.

McQueary, an assistant football coach placed on administrative leave this fall amid the scandal, told the grand jury he was shocked, then noticed that Sandusky and the boy saw him. He left the building "distraught," according to the grand jury's report.

McQueary first reported what he saw to his father, and told Paterno what he had seen the next day. The head coach himself testified to a grand jury that McQueary told him he saw Sandusky "fondling or doing something of a sexual nature."

His father, John McQueary, testified Friday that he followed up with Schultz, who "knew about it and something was being done."

Asked if McQueary reported seeing an act of sodomy, Curley responded, "Absolutely not," the grand jury reported.

Schultz testified that he recalled being told at a meeting that Sandusky "may have grabbed the boy's genitals while wrestling" and agreed it would be inappropriate sexual conduct between a man and a boy, the grand jury said. But he also testified that the allegations made were "not that serious" and that he and Curley "had no indication that a crime had occurred."

Neither man reported what he'd been told to local or campus police.

"The grand jury found that portions of the testimony provided by Curley and Schultz were not credible," the report said.

Curley, 57, is now on leave, and Schultz, 62, retired in the wake of the allegations. Days later, Penn State trustees ousted President Graham Spanier and Paterno amid criticism that they could and should have done more.

Prosecutors were out in force for Friday's hearing before Judge William Wenner. According to the state attorney general's office, Chief of Staff Bruce R. Beeme will lead the prosecution along with Frank Fina and E. Marc Costanzo, deputy attorneys general.

There hasn't exactly been a lot of good news about the Penn State football program in recent months, and the program got a bit more on Saturday. There are multiple reports coming out of State College that quarterback Matt McGloin got into a fight with receiver Curtis Drake following practice on Saturday. A fight that ended with McGloin being knocked out cold.

The details of what happened or what caused the fight are still sketchy at this point, but apparently there was a heated exchange during practice, and when Drake approached McGloin in the locker room after practice, things went downhill. A team meeting has been called for 4:30pm local time.

Anna Orso of the Daily Collegian also confirmed that the university police have filed a report, but they wouldn't give any more information than that.

Penn State is scheduled to play Houston in the Ticketcity Bowl on January 2nd.
When it rains it pours in State College.

Bowl games are such a joke. Here's the attendance for today's games.

New Mexico Bowl - 25,762
Famous Idaho Potato Bowl - 28,076

I'd love to know most of these games even make a profit.

I cannot recall that sort of thing happening even once during Paterno's decades at Penn St. Ya, I know the child rape stuff was 1,000 times worse, but things seems to be breaking down fast in Happy Valley.

I'd love to know most of these games even make a profit.
I was thinking that too. But I can't imagine they would keep having these games if they aren't making money off of them.

The NCAA's committee on infractions will announce this afternoon what sanctions Ohio State will face for players receiving cash and tattoos for memorabilia from a tattoo parlor owner. Ohio State has already vacated the 2010 season, returned it's bowl money, and put itself on probation, but the NCAA could add to those penalties.

Are these the same infractions related to last year's Sugar Bowl fiasco? If so, further shame on the NCAA for taking almost an entire year to figure it out.

Such a joke of an institution.

So according to FSU player Arrington Jenkins if a motorcycle is just out in the open the owner should expect it to be stolen? Amazing. This whole story is jaw-dropping in it's stupidity.

Quote:
Freshman linebacker Arrington Jenkins asks you, citizen: What was he supposed to do this weekend when, facing a motorcycle-less future, he happened upon a motorcycle just sitting there unattended near his residence? Being a man of action, he took matters into his own hands (emphasis added):

The Tallahassee Police Department received a report of a stolen green motorcycle off Chapel Dr. around 2 p.m. on Sunday. Later, the victim returned to the scene and noticed skid marks that led from where the motorcycle was last seen to a location nearby, totaling about 1/10 of a mile.
[…]
The report states that when officers asked Jenkins if he knew why they were there, Jenkins conceded that it was about the motorcycle. Jenkins told the officers that he found the motorcycle lying on the ground and had taken it in to his apartment to put in his room. Jenkins told officers that it was not his motorcycle and he didn't know who it belonged to, but allegedly told the officers that "anyone who leaves a motorcycle out should expect to have it stolen."
The officers entered the apartment and the motorcycle was recovered. The victim said that the motorcycle was damaged extensively.

That's sound advice for all property owners, Arrington (right), but you're still not allowed to actually be the guy that steals the bike: Jenkins was subsequently charged with grand theft of a motor vehicle, a third-degree felony. He bonded out on $5,000 bail later in the day.

Incredibly, the charges against Jenkins represented only the second-dumbest grand theft case of the weekend involving a Seminole player. The championship belt goes to redshirt junior Avis Commack (pictured at top), who turned himself into campus police on Friday — just hours after his graduation — for allegedly stealing an iPad from a fellow student's backpack on Dec. 6. Officers reportedly tracked Commack after he used the iPad to log in to the university network with his own information, and subsequently charged him with felony grand theft of an item valued between $300 and $5,000.
