USC has to be a pre-season top-3, maybe #1 going into 2012. Would have been even better had Kalil returned, but they'll still be a great team.

I can understand why he'd want to return. Due to the sanctions Barkley didn't get a chance to win a conference title and compete in a major BCS game. I think USC's probation also unfairly hurt him in the Heisman vote. He should have finished better than 6th in that vote.

In 2012 he has great chance at a conf title, Heisman and maybe national title.

LSU will be the 2012 pre-season #1 team.

That's what I keep hearing. Do we know who LSU will even have at QB though? Looks like their two starters from this season, Jefferson and Lee are both graduating seniors. All their good RB's and WR's appear to be returning underclassmen, which is a plus.

One of the more impressive college QB careers is coming to a close tonight. Boise St.'s Kellen Moore is playing his final game. He'll end his college career starting every game since he was a freshman with a record of 50-3.

If not for a few freakish bad breaks he could have been undefeated. These are his only 3 losses. All three losses were by a FG or less.

2008 - Lost Poinsettia Bowl to TCU 17-16
2010 - Lost to Nevada 34-31 thanks to multiple easy FG's missed by the kicker
2011 - Lost to TCU 36-35 due to a missed FG

Ticket Sales so far...

Wisconsin 25,000 (of 25,000)
Oregon 25,000 (of 25,000)
South Carolina 10,500 (of 12,500)
Virginia Tech 10,000 (of 17,500)
Clemson 8,800 (of 17,500)
Nebraska 8,100 (of 12,500)
West Virginia 7,500 (of 17,500)
Ohio State 7,000 (of 12,750)

The reason? Secondary markets are cheaper and offer better seats. All schools expect much higher turnout than sales indicate, just from general ticket sales instead of those issued to the schools

The number of tickets schools are required to buy at face value is complete crap. Schools are routinely losing money on bowl games because they can't sell the tickets at a discount so they end up with a huge number of unsold tickets. Last year at the Insight Bowl Iowa had a huge number of fans at the stadium and the game had it's biggest attendance ever, yet Iowa only sold 6,000 of it's 11,000 alloted tickets. The reason was Iowa had to sell the tickets at face value and the seats were in a corner, and seats at midfield were selling for 50% off face value so it made no sense to buy tickets from the school. Iowa is back in the Insight Bowl this year and once again a huge crowd is expected but Iowa will probably have at least 4,000 unsold tickets this year.

I love their agreement with Nike. Oregon's unis are either groundbreaking or a crime to the eyes.

Was just on ESPN's site and saw that Purdue and Western Michigan are playing in the Little Caesars Bowl right now. I'd love to see the ratings for that game. Who schedules a bowl game for 4:30 Eastern on a Tuesday? Most people in the western time zone won't even be off work by the time the game ends.

Bowl games attendance numbers:

NEW MEXICO BOWL - 25,762
FAMOUS IDAHO POTATO BOWL - 28,076
R+L CARRIERS NEW ORLEANS BOWL - 42,841
BEEF 'O' BRADY'S BOWL - 20,072
POINSETTIA BOWL - 24,607
MAACO BOWL LAS VEGAS - 35,720
SHERATON HAWAII BOWL - 32,630
INDEPENDENCE BOWL - 41,728

See... this is why the bowl system is so amazing and perfect! Now every team with a .500 or better record gets to play in some obscure game in a half empty stadium.

Do teams playing in these pointless bowl games actually make a profit? There is no point in 6-6 teams being rewarded for going .500.

Who really knows. There really isn't much accountability with the way these bowl games operate. It took years for the public to find out about all the shady/illegal behavior that was going on with the Fiesta Bowl committee. The entire bowl system is rotten to the core. That's what makes it so hard to bring down. Nobody wants to rock the boat.

As for these smaller schools, I'd be surprised if any of them make muhc if any profit from these junk bowl games.

The extra 3-4 weeks of practice time for the next season is usually payment enough.

That's a good point. Plus the coaches and school probably both like having "bowl wins" on their resume, even if they are truely horrid bowls. I've never really said just eliminate all the bowls. I'd just rather see scrap the BCS, implement an 8 or 16 team playoff and keep the bowls for teams that don't make the playoff.

Wow, that was a really effective unintentional(?) onside kick by Purdue, heads-up play by the guys on the edge to follow it ten yards/shield WMU's players from it. We've got a good game going here!

OMG are you guys watching this Lil Caesar's Bowl? We've had an accidental onside kick, a fake PAT two-point conversion, multiple turnovers, and now a kickoff return for a touchdown. Crazy first half, currently 17-15 Purdue leading.

Edit: And now another successful onside kick by Purdue. I wonder if they saw something when they scouted WMU's kickoff coverage or if the kicker is calling his own number or what...
