New interview from Variety, promoting her new film "Colette", which premieres tomorrow at the Sundance Film Festival (can we please just see one of her new films already!? ).

Keira Knightley on ‘Colette,’ Pushing for Social Change, and if She’ll Ever Direct

Quote:
Keira Knightley speaks her mind.

While most movie stars frequently offer up anodyne responses to reporters’ inquiries and deploy an army of publicists and image makers to ensure they never say anything remotely controversial, Knightley refuses to dodge tough questions. She’s ostensibly talking to Variety about “Colette,” a historical drama centering on the legendary French novelist that will premiere Jan. 20 at the Sundance Film Festival, but Knightley is more comfortable holding forth on the topical subjects of feminism, sexism and the lack of opportunities for female directors than she is talking about her creative process.

That’s what makes the 32-year-old actress a natural fit for the title role in the indie production. The mononymous Colette, perhaps best known for her novella “Gigi,” was a barrier breaker. A woman who had romances with women and men, and who rose to the top of belle époque society by writing stories, such as “Chéri” and the Claudine novels, that had a refreshing sexual candor. But some glass ceilings proved difficult to shatter for the literary sensation. She was involved in an exploitative relationship with her husband, a writer known as Willy (played in the film by Dominic West), who passed Colette’s work off as his own, reaping both the critical acclaim and financial rewards for himself.

Looking forward to seeing it. Reviews should start coming in after its premiere tonight. Though, if it's really good, I imagine it won't be released until the end of the year, during Oscar season.

Still waiting on The Aftermath as well, which I believe has been picked up by Fox Searchlight for release this year.

'Colette': Keira Knightley-Led Biopic Goes to Bleecker Street, 30WEST | Sundance 2018 | Hollywood Reporter

Quote:
In the first major deal on the ground in Sundance, Bleecker Street and 30WEST have partnered to acquire U.S. rights to Colette, starring Keira Knightley.

A source pegged the deal at mid-seven figures, and the film will receive a traditional theatrical release in 2018.

The historical drama sees Knightley portraying the groundbreaking French novelist who began her career by penning the loosely autobiographical Claudine novels, for which her husband Willy (Dominic West) took credit. She then works to escape his control and reclaim her literary voice.

Amazon, Fox Searchlight and Sony Pictures Classics also were chasing the film, which made its world premiere last night and sparked a competitive bidding situation.

Wash Westmoreland (Still Alice) directed the film from a script he co-wrote with Richard Glatzer and Rebecca Lenkiewicz. Fiona Shaw, Denise Gough, Eleanor Tomlinson and Aiysha Hart round out the cast. The film debuted in the Premieres section of the Sundance Film Festival.

Colette will mark the first pairing for Bleecker Street and 30WEST, both relative newcomers that have enjoyed success with awards-season vehicles, which Colette appears to be. Founded four years ago, Andrew Karpen's Bleecker Street nabbed best actor Oscar nominations for Viggo Mortensen (Captain Fantastic) and Bryan Cranston (Trumbo). Likewise, 30WEST, launched just last year by Dan Friedkin and Micah Green, is making a strong showing this year with its film I, Tonya, with stars Margot Robbie and Allison Janney landing a Golden Globe nomination and win, respectively (Neon is a partner on that film).

John DeFore's review in THR called the film "an engaging literary coming-of-age story, and one embodied ably by its star."

Elizabeth Karlsen, Stephen Woolley, Pamela Koffler, Christine Vachon, Michel Litvak and Gary Michael Walters produced.

CAA and Endeavor Content handled the deal.

She gave her take on why she avoids modern roles in movies...because of rape and wanting to avoid roles that follow into that.

Per: https://www.theguardian.com/film/201...l-secrets-film

Quote:
Her story has been all but forgotten in the years since the 2003 Iraq war ended, overshadowed by more recent, flashier tales. Now a new film, starring Keira Knightley and Matt Smith, will put GCHQ whistleblower Katharine Gun back in the spotlight – and in doing so ask audiences the question: where do your true loyalties lie?

“I found Katharine’s story fascinating,” says director Gavin Hood, known for the Helen Mirren thriller Eye in the Sky and the acclaimed South African crime drama Tsotsi. He will begin filming Official Secrets in March, with a planned release date later this year.

“It’s a story that has largely been overlooked. Even in the recent Iraq inquiry, which was otherwise very thorough, she was not called to testify. Katharine’s story is a very important piece of the Iraq war puzzle and one which has been missing for too long.”

Gun, 28 at the time, was working as a Mandarin translator at GCHQ, the British government’s communications HQ in Cheltenham, when she leaked a confidential US National Security Agency email to the Observer. The memo, a single sheet of paper, asked her and her colleagues to help the US government spy on UN security council delegations in New York. The belief was that doing so would help the US and UK governments to swing wavering countries in favour of a planned invasion of Iraq.

The story, one of the most important and delicate in the history of the Observer, ran even though the paper had controversially taken a pro-war stance weeks earlier. It cost Gun, who now lives in Turkey with her husband and daughter, her job. She was subsequently arrested and charged under the Official Secrets Act.

Colette has been set for release on September 21. A bit of a wait, but not so long as I might have expected. We probably won't have a poster or trailer for a while yet.

Meanwhile, Keira's new Coco Mademoiselle Short Film came out today:
