Invasion of the Body Snatchers 4K UHD (1978)

Checking it in DV and… it still has chroma errors lol. Seems not even the DV layer was able to completely fix that (and the chroma errors seem almost identical too, like the DV layer is almost not doing anything to fix them). The film grain looks a little better but still not great. Not the worst… but I’ve seen better. Again, even in DV.

This is a picture taken with my phone of the disc in Dolby Vision. Notice it still has those green blobs, more noticeable on the left side. Not as obvious as my other screenshots, but the chroma errors are still there:

I mean....okay? But here's the thing: When I'm watching that scene in motion, as the director intended, my eye goes to the guy on the street. It doesn't stop on the street surface. You're actually forcing yourself to focus on peripherals, rather than going with the natural cognitive flow of the piece.

So I have to say, I don't really look at that screenshot and freak out. Could it be encoded better? Sure. But I'm fairly confident it's not going to bother me when I watch it.

MadVR has a bunch of tweaking you can do. The settings used in caps-a-holic could very well be different than the ones I use. I do have the tone mapping in the MadVR settings in my PC set to ‘are you nuts?’ highlight recovery and I believe it was set to 150 nits. It's been a while since I've used MadVR, but iirc all the highlight recovery strengths have some degree of artifacting such as ringing. I can imagine that ‘are you nuts?’ has the most artifacting of all the options.

My partner works from home and every few minutes he'd hear me absolutely lose it in the living room. Just dropping mad F bombs every time it happened. I hate that remote now. Lmao.

I have an A80j and the x800m2 and I'm also experiencing the brightness fluctuation in DV mode. Not all DV encoded disc does this but it does occur. I was always wondering why this happened.

Just want to go on record (hopefully less awkwardly?) that I think the disc looks great and I think the screenshots do NOT tell the story of the film in motion. Film grain when captured in a still frame can be misleading. I agree with this site's review that it's a must-buy for fans of the movie. This brave new world of having every release pulled apart one still-frame at a time and every line of a review questioned and put through the wringer continually surprises me. Invasion of the Body Snatchers has never looked so good.
