So I watched the trilogy yesterday. The shifting IMAX ratios are far more arbitrary, gimmicky and distracting than any 3D movie I've ever experienced.
TDKR being the least-engaging of the 3 movies certainly doesn't help, especially when there's a greater percentage of IMAX footage in TDKR. It quickly became a game of spotting the aspect ratio change from cut-to-cut and there are some hilariously-underwhelming IMAX choices. It would be one thing if IMAX was used uninterrupted but there are bizarre things like 35mm shots surrounded by IMAX footage and vice versa and before you know it you're laughing about how Nolan thought it was a good idea to film Christian Bale on a staircase or Anne Hathaway entering a modest living room or Matthew Modine sitting in a car with a large-format camera. It also tends to shoot the non-IMAX scenes in the foot, it's almost as if the films themselves are telling you that the sequence you're watching is "less-than." The footage itself looks great, much to the detriment of the non-IMAX footage as well. |
