His time isn't up yet. I wouldn't be surprised to see him have a good year at Kansas this year. Gunner Kiel does seem to be one of those 'superstar' recruits though. Hell, he even has a studs name. Gunner Kiel.

While I'm happy about this, I wouldn't be at all surprised to see him turn out like a Ron Powlus or something.

They had a "stud quarterback" in the name of Jimmy Clausen for the better part of three seasons. How did that work out for them?

It would have been great had Charlie Weis actually known how to coach defense.

Notre Dame almost always has top-10 recruiting classes, often top-5 and time and time again they don't pan out. Every year regardless of coach it's the same old story. They start off being a preseason top-25, lose several games with a weak schedule and finish with a mediocre record.

Regardless of their record for the 2012 season, this is a year you can't call their schedule "soft" and justify it.

They play a decent schedule -- not too hard and not too easy. They have plenty of ACC teams year after year to help offset the difficult teams.

You can't blame Clausen for his junior year. He was sensational his final year. But man was that defense porous!

I am interested to see what Weis can do at Kansas. He might suck as a game day head coach but he's an incredible recruiter. His recruiting alone should considerably improve a Kansas team that went 5-19 the past two seasons.

Kansas loves them some fat coaches. What do Mangino + Weis weigh, like 700-800 lbs?

The thing is all Kansas wants is to be competitive in the Big XII. If they win 7-9 games a year, they will pay Charlie all the money he wants. I think it's a good fit.

Dont know if you guys saw it, the NCAA id looking to stiffen up penalties like crazy

bit.ly/xDBFa4

Under this, USC would have lost 32-45 scholarships per year

Navy (In Ireland)
Purdue
@Michigan State
Michigan
Miami (In Chicago)
Stanford
BYU
@Oklahoma
Pittsburgh
@Boston College
Wake Forest
@USC

Not that I'm counting or anything, but that's five top 15 teams and nine opponents who went to bowl games. Not to mention Miami would have and WILL be a tough game and Navy is no slouch anymore either. Every game minus Purdue and perhaps a BYU or BC will be difficult, especially without knowing who your QB is.

Which is COMPLETELY STUPID, thankyouverymuch.

Another clueless move by the NCAA. The problem isn't that the penalties are not severe enough. It's that there is NO consistency either in the standard expected from programs OR the penalties enforced when you have similar violations.

[Show spoiler]I guess USC's preseason top-5 ranking for 2012 is getting the NCAA's panties in a bunch. They didn't accomplish their goal of destroying USC's football program.

A pox on them all (the power structure of the NCAA, that is). I burst my pimples at them. I fart in their general direction. Eff 'em.

Well hell, may as well bring back the death penalty then. That's almost as bad.

If a top high school prospect pans out, its usually because they actually are smart enough to choose the right school that caters to their style. Just because a school gets a top prospect doesn't mean they will be able to plan in that offense/defense. That why UVA historically gets the best high school players, but VT always has the better team. Beamer is a master at finding 2-star recruits that can play in his system.

The thing is Weis was recruiting at Notre Dame, a school that gets great recruits every year regardless of their coach. Even if Notre Dame hasn't been very relevant the last 15 years they still have more history then almost any other school, they have the allure of every game being nationally televised, they are a great academic school, and they are the top Catholic school in the country. We'll see how Weis can do at Kansas, a basketball-first school which is typically the worst school in the Big 12. I know they had some success with Mangino but they only have 3 winning seasons over the last 10 years.

They do like their overweight coaches

I agree we'll see what kind of "coach" he is without those indy cupcakes and still be able to make bowls.

That was exactly the problem John Brantley had when he took over as Florida's QB after Tebow graduated. He was an extremely highly rated QB coming out of HS with a lot of potential, but he clearly did not fit the Florida offense built for Tebow. He would have been successful at many other schools, just not UF. Of course it also didn't help that he had to be the guy to take over the job of the departing most beloved Gator in team history.
