Also Brantley came in when the line was all graduating, the WRs were going down each year since Tebow came in. He really was left with like 1 or two people to help him.

ESPN Insider (subscription required) takes a look back at the top 150 recruits of 2008 and it's clear that recruiting really is a crapshoot. Of the top 25 recruits only 4 players, Julio Jones (#2 recruit), A.J. Green (#5), Patrick Peterson (#8), and Jonathon Baldwin (#25), were first round picks. 10 of the top 25 players transferred from their original schools.

Quote:
Joe Paterno, the man who for decades was synonymous with the powerhouse Penn State football program, is reportedly in declining health. Onward State, the student-run Penn State website, reported on Saturday that Paterno had been taken off his respirator that morning, according to a source close to the family. Further, a report by Tom McAndrew of Blue White Illustrated indicates that Paterno's extended family has been summoned to the hospital.

If those reports are true, Paterno likely has, at best, a matter of days to live. It may be even shorter than that, as Mike Sisak of the Citizens' Voice in Wilkes-Barre is reporting that Paterno is "near death."

It was only a week ago that Paterno gave his first interview since his November firing at the height of the Jerry Sandusky child sex abuse scandal. In it, interviewer Sally Jenkins noted that Paterno was wheelchair-bound, wearing a wig, and reduced to whispers due to his battle with lung cancer. Further, Paterno is 85, and the sad fact is that there just aren't many 85-year-old men who can begin and win a fight with a disease like lung cancer. Still, Jenkins also noted that Paterno remained sharp, and his familiar tone and personality are evident in the interview snippets that were posted online.

CBSSports.com will provide more details as they become available, as this is a developing situation.

Penn State student website Onward State has reported that Penn State players were notified of longtime head coach Joe Paterno's passing via email, and CBSSports.com went on this report. Paterno, 85, had been receiving chemotherapy as part of his treatment for lung cancer.

However, Paterno family spokesperson Dan McGinn told a New York Times reporter that the report of Paterno's demise is "absolutely not true," and Jay Paterno tweeted that his father "continues to fight." Onward State has since retracted their report.

Espn is saying right now he's gone... In my op he got off way to easy for what he allowed to take place at PSU. I'd have loved to seen him drag his a$$ to court every day.

I am happy he got to see his team ripped away from him.

Wow you sir are an as-----, you don't have all the facts none of us do to sit here pass judgement on something we all know very little about is pretty hypocritical.

For all we know he reported and questioned it every day, think about it he would have to have some very hard evidence before going tot he police over something that would ruin someones life. Yes it turned out potentially bad right now but what if Sandusky is found innocent? Then is Paterno a bad guy?

How bout I go to the police right now because lets say MaCruz or ChadFL said you did X act ... hmm don't you think it would ruin your life your reputation true or not just because someone said they saw it? Yeah why don't you think about that a bit then get back to me.

lol thats why there are courts to sue someone for defamation, and honestly if I were to get successfully sued for such an accusation that proved to be untrue, at least I could sleep at night.

And your right we don't have all the facts, he did one decent thing (reported it too his boss) when he could have done 50 kept the guy off campus, not helped his charity, exc. exc.

Oh and on his football legacy go read the OTL article about his changes in policy when he was on the cusp of being fired, where he jacked up the number of thug players he brought to the school. Or read about how when his players got in a huge fight he said he'd make them clean the stadium for the rest of the year (only to stop it after an hour of picking up trash on the first game following the incident).

There is a pattern here where you choose to acknowledge it or not.

And Hypocritical would be saying I hate people who eat Mcdonalds, while I ate there. which is why that didn't make sense lol

I'd like to say while evidence would suggest the guy wasn't the hero/icon everyone makes him out to be, today is probably not the right day to disparage him. So at least for today, let's try to be respectful, the man did just die and he meant a lot to a lot of people.

I felt that was a reserved opinion , as it could have been harsher

Leaving Paterno out of it if Sandusky gets out of it it'll mean one of two things.

1. The Sandusky case is the biggest conspiracy of all-time with no less than one or two dozen people creating really incredible stories about Sandusky, as well as Sandusky simply enjoying showering with little kids late at night but never once abusing them. Fat chance.

2. Sandusky's lawyers successfully use the Chewbacca Defense, much like the O.J. Simpson and Casey Anthony cases.

Ya... more likely scenario #2.

Rutgers has reportedly hired Kurt Flood as their new head coach. Flood was the team's offensive line coach since 2005 and was named interim head coach after Greg Schiano left for the Tampa Bay Buccaneers last week. Rutgers supposedly went after Temple's Steve Addazio but he wasn't interested, and multiple reports stated yesterday that Florida International's Mario Cristobal had accepted the Rutgers job but they turned out to be erroneous. With signing day tomorrow it was key for Rutgers to hire a coach by today.

Thoughts on national signing day.

- Florida schools are cleaning up. 3 of the top 8 ranked classes are Florida teams - UF, Miami and FSU.

- Seems Texas A&M is seeing a big bump in recruiting thanks to the move to the SEC. They have the 13th ranked class. Last year they were 27th.

- As usual Alabama and Texas are the top two right now. Though those rankings are based is part on quantity, not quality.

- USC actually has by far the best class in terms of quality. Their avg recruit rating is 4.07 stars. They only have 15 recruits due to limits in place due to probation terms. But 13 of 15 recruits are 4-stars or better.

- Urban Meyer's recruiting is carrying over to Ohio St. Their class is ranked #4. Michigan isn't far behind at #5.

- Vanderbilt has a surprisingly good class, ranked #28 nationally.

- Very poor Penn St. class as expected due to the chaos within that program - ranked 50th.

That was one of the things that caught my eye; they had 4 four-star recruits and 16 three-star recruits -- a pretty good recruiting class indeed.

In addition to the SEC move Texas A&M's improved class could also have to do with the new coach as well. Mike Sherman wasn't exactly the most exciting guy and I could see a lot of recruits not wanting to play for him but Kevin Sumlin is a new, younger, exciting coach whose Houston teams scored a lot of points and were fun to watch.

College recruiting may be partly a guessing game, but I love national signing day and eat up all the coverage we have been getting on ESPNU. What sucks is after the Super Bowl how long we have to go before seeing any football.

Missouri also appears to have gotten a bump in recruiting from their SEC move. Thye have the 32nd ranked class i nthe nation. That includes the overall #1 ranked HS player in the nation - a receiver.
