Really good article:
http://www.highdef.com/magazine/arch...08_6NovDec.pdf Says the show was protected for 16x9 and that all eppy's will probably be in HD eventually. |

I'm not really satisfied with that article. It felt like they had a few good technical points to report, but ended up painting the overall article with their own flavor too heavily, if you get what I mean.
And the fact that they say they protected 16:9 "so it could be shown in HD". It could be 4:3 in HD, 16:9 is not a requirement of an HD transfer. And they say it was shot with 16:9 protected after John Inwood came on board, but that he came on after the pilot was completed. But the first episode was one of the episodes that exhibited 16:9 flashbacks during the final season. Just doesn't feel right. |

In fact, all I can find is this script, which-- unless I'm mistaken-- is the episode known as "My First Day". Notice also that the trivia section of IMDB's page for "My First Day" refers to the fact that the pilot was shot in another hospital, something which is probably apparent to longtime-fans in the first episode. They do say that SOME scenes were reshot in the "normal" hospital (possibly due to recasting after finishing the "unaired" pilot), and this could have been after John Inwood came on board, but if it was truly him behind the planning ahead for 16:9, then the old footage from the "wrong" hospital would not be available in 16:9. However, I do believe that some of those shots are seen in the first post of this thread; I'm looking at the interaction between JD and the Janitor at the door in particular. Don't know what I'm arguing for, just pointing out funny inconsistencies. I also took a bit of a look at how the framing is in 16:9 versus 4:3 in captures in the first psot, and I'd like to say now that it doesn't bother me like it has for modern shows which frame for 4:3 and open a matte for 16:9. What do you guys think about the horizontal framing here? |
