I never got a real kick out of the blu-ray display they have at BestBuy (samsung 6 series). The only wow effect I recieved was from a LED TV (Sony, Samsung, etc). Once LED TV's become more affordable and mainstream then you will see a big jump to Blu Ray.
Watching Iron Man at Best Buy on a Sony Bravia 55xBR8 changed my perception instantly. Once TV's become more affordable then consumers will understand the potential of Blu Ray. |

Yes, I agree with Forsberg. Plasmas are still the way to go, hell, Costco has a lot of great Panasonic 09 models for great prices, in the 42"-50" size.
Fors, you've come a long way, I'm proud - you have picked up a lot of knowledge in the past few months here on this website and are always helping others out. |

Dude, all I got is a 40" Samsung 1080p LCD, highdef cable (with crappy compression) a super-crappy Philips shelf system (with 4 crappy small speakers plugged into it for a wider field of sound...it only helps a little) and a Playstation 2 plugged in via Component.
My viewing experience is about 1000 times better than it was last year. The TV and my new Harmony 550 alone makes the experience much better. I can't wait until I upgrade to a 7.1 Onkyo HTS6100 and a PS3 for Blu Ray. Its gonna be fricken SWEET!!! |

I think in order to get the "full" experience of Blu ("full" in the sense that you really don't "need" anything else in order to really "wow" a group of people with a movie you put on, and to realize better PQ/AQ than a DVD player), one really only needs to invest in a 5.1 receiver, with some modest speakers plugged into it. All this and that with lossless vs. lossy is lost (pun not really intended) on the average consumer, so a older-tech receiver will likely produce anything anyone except for audiophiles would need. The HDMI aspect of a modern receiver is nice for component synchronization, so the receiver should probably have that connectivity available. I mean sure, you could say that to get 100% of what Blu has to offer, you'd need a 7.1 receiver, with 10 floor-standing tower speakers, a 150" screen, and all that jazz. That might be the case, but the percentage of people with something like that in their home is extremely low. I'd say if you kept it to a more relative scale, it's still going to be a pretty small percentage, citing the post by Rob J in WNY without re-stating what he said already. It will be much higher, though. Just to put in perspective: I have the absolute best home theater out of anyone I know, and anyone who watches any Blu/HD on my setup is blown away without fail, but mine pales in comparison to many or most of the ones here on this forum. |

right now i'm only a 7.1 receiver away from being nearly true blu, but my system can milk a 5.1 DD for all it's worth, so i could consider my self true blu when watching a lossy WB title ![]() |

Yeah, but the thing is, my DVD's look so much better than they used to, I'm happier than a pig in crap! I love watching DVD movies more than I ever have and I've always loved watching movies. The bigger tv with better resolution really does make a big difference.
Hopefully by the end of the year (or tax time at the very latest) I'll have the full fledged HT setup. No more movie theatre after that. (okay, maybe for the occasional big budget sci-fi flick when my boys are older) |

Okay, I want to take a second to chime in here. I have a 42" Panasonic Plasma (1080i) with a PS3 and a Polk surround bar in my living room. In my bedroom I have a 40" Sony LCD (1080p) with a PS3. THATS IT! And honestly, that is MORE than enough for me. I'm not interested in HD sound at all (I never even use my surround bar). BUT I love my HD picture. That is more than enough for me. And my DVD's even look better using the PS3. I have about 2000 DVD's and 200 Blu's. So I don't know how you would categorize me, but I know that IN MY OPINION I am getting enough of the blu-ray experience. Any more and I might actually be turned off.

We always watch tv and use our stereo speakers. As a matter of fact back in 1988 we had a hitachi hi-def vcr with extra speaker outputs on it, so I think we had 4 speakers hooked up to it at that time. So we have always listened through the stereo. When my kids were little everyone thought they had a hearing problem because the would have to turn up the tv volume so loud when they were at other peoples houses. I don't know how people can do without a receiver and speaker set-up. I must say that I am highly impressed with the sound of blu-rays, it is an important part of the movie experience
