I'd imagine people call Watchmen "The Watchmen" because it's an easy mistake. I mean the superhero group, in the movie/book were known as The Watchmen.

as for Knowing? I've never heard that be said, before.

I more often run into movies with "The" in the title having "the" removed.
The Dark Knight is often called Dark Knight, in my circles.

No the group in the GN were called 'The Crimebusters' not 'The Watchmen'. And I have been reading the topic just now and have came back to reply. I still have school and work so I can't keep up to date with my topics 24/7. Anyway okay maybe adding 'The' infront of movies didn't start with 'The Dark Knight' But I have noticed in Australia atleast alot more people are adding 'The' infront of movie titles. And to the poster that said I called 'Watchmen' 'The Watchmen' and 'Knowing' 'The Knowing' I was actually saying the opposite.

The people of New York City called them The Watchmen and they ended up adopting the name by default. I've read the Comic at least 6 or 7 times, since I bought it in 1999. Where they start doesn't supersede where they end. The Minutemen, Crimebusters, The Watchmen.

Get over yourself, Graphic Novel Boy.

PS: if you're going to nit pick about a comic, don't call it a Graphic Novel. If the details are so important to you, clearly you enjoy the book. It isn't a graphic novel. It was a series of comic books collected into a single volume. That's known as a collected edition. Graphic Novels are written and drawn to be released in that format.
If you are afraid to say the word "comic book" so much that you have to call it by a more scholarly sounding name, if comic books are so intellectually stigmatized to you that you can't call them by their proper name, you shouldn't read them.

People who call comic books graphic novels make me sick. What a bunch of snobs.

I'm quite sure they never accept the name for themselves, because to call them "watchmen" is coming from the phrase "who watches the watchmen", and that is denigrating to them.

However, in the movie they definitively take the name to simplify things for the viewer. You can argue that people refer to them as that in the comic so that's their de facto name, but that's something completely different than the movie and I think the distinction is worth noticing when a poster implies that the movie is the same as the comic in this regard.

But that said, I think the phrase "who watches the watchmen" doesn't just refer to the group of vigilantes, but to authority in general. The "watchmen" aren't just the heroes of the comic, but the government as well.

I'm not a moron.
I understand the inference.
Let me break this down for you:
The graffiti starts occurring
The phrase is coined
The media, around the time of Doc Manhattan's defeat of the Vietnamese, start calling them The Watchmen.
The government seem to start doing this, too.
Between this time and the Keane Act, the Crimestoppers work for the Government who . . . call them the Watchmen.
Calling them the CrimeStoppers was the second Night Owl's idea
Calling them the Watchmen was everybody else's.
it doesn't matter what they called themselves.

That's part of the nihilistic point Alan Moore was making; you're only as good as people make you out to be.

I can't believe I actually clicked on this thread. You have got to be kidding me? This is worth talking about? Things you HATE? Get a life dude, You truly are from the Dark Side. And to blame it on The Dark Knight? Yes "Dark Knight" rolls off better so we decided to add The in front of it. Like you are THE idiot.

Yay! I'm finally not the only person who clicked this for purely antagonistic reasons!

Unlcle Leo,

You just reminded me what I was thinking of the first time I read the OP. It feels like a Sienfeld opening skit.

"Don't you hate after you drink a cup of coffee and your breath smells like coffee. What's up with that?"

"Don't you hate it when people start typing IMHO, OMF, WTF. How can people communicate like this? It's crazy"

Who can write the longest line of Internet slang to describe this thread's topic. The first prize is our affection and admiration. Second prize is a copy of "Dark Night" on Blue-ray.

I think they have been using the word "the" in front of movies FAR before The Dark Knight.
