Good example is to try to find Lion King on DVD. They are not available cause it's back in the vault. Sure you can find some copies, but they are not getting any more in, so when they sell out, they are out!
That reminds me.. I better buy that one!

I am eagerly awaiting the classic and some of the recent Disney films on BD, as well as all the Pixar films.

As an aside.. I wish Buena Vista would revisit their plans to release Open Range on BD. That was discussed and put on hold. Have not heard anything on this in months.

And like you said, the Vault was slammed shut for quite some time after that. If you didn't pick up a title your were out of luck for a quite a while.
Actually--after everyone kept returning the "Limited Edition" birth-of-DVD's as "defective" (remember looking for that "Character artwork on disk"? )--the original idea was to have Gold editions perpetually available, and one "event" Platinum edition every year on what was going to be a ten-year vault cycle--
Which later became two Platinums on a five-year cycle, after heads worried what would happen if this "hi-def" thing they read about arrived too early...

Later on, "Peter Pan", "Pinocchio" and the two Fantasias were pulled off of shelves to be added to the Vault Platinums...And then the Lion and Pan sequels were pulled off, in the hopes we might see package editions on the next Platinums (it didn't happen).
And then all those little one-disk Gold editions had to come back in 2-Disk Special editions, after their video division came up with the ideas of producing sequels as "commercials" for the originals, and letting them cross-promote each other.

Seeing as the "Vault cycle" system all started around '01 or so, we should see the ol' wheel turning back on us over the next year-abouts, and Disney wants to use Blu to cross-promote their Princess line--Which means that any-minute-now "Snow White" Blu-Ray is a matter of when, not if.
(But they're still probably going to transfer the IMAX reissues first, 'cause they're easier. )
