congrats on the ps3 purchase, I just bought a used 40gb ps3 for my dad for fathers day/b-day w/ nascar 09 and let me tell you he has been on that game non stop, literally.. I thought the ps3 would have overheated by now, as for the warranty I have the 60gb version of the ps3 and have never had a problem, I don't buy the "cheese" I can fix my ps3 if I have any problems. I would suggest buying used games from half.com, that is where I get most of my ps3 games for around $21 which includes shipping, now as for games I'm not a hardcore gamer but this is what I would suggest:

Call of Duty 4 & 5 are must haves IMO (I've never played a game as much as I have these 2 titles)
Madden 2010 (not released yet but should be a huge upgrade over 2009)
Pure (fun ATV game)

I would hold off until the GOTY edition is available. Bethesda is prepping to nickel-and-dime everyone with DLC packs pretty soon.

If you like shooters, I might look for Rainbow Six Vegas 2 and FarCry 2. Used copies should be really cheap, and they are games that I find myself going back to a lot.

Metal Gear Solid 4, obviously.

My suggestions:

Metal Gear Solid 4: Guns Of The Patriots
Call Of Duty 4: Modern Warfare
Call Of Duty: World At War
Modern Warfare 2 (11.10.09)

As you can tell I'm a fan of the Call Of Duty series. World At War had a fun campaign, but in my opinion lacked in the multi-player section. I don't know why, just wan't as intense as Modern Warfare.

If you haven't player any of the other Metal Gear's I'd stay away from Guns Of The Patriots, you'll be seriously lost. But, if that doesn't bother you, buy it, it's a great game.

And congrats on the new PS3. That little black machine can do anything.
