A decent amount of extras is a great thing! Thanks for posting the link to the review.

Alas, I have not seen Universal's early HD-DVD transfer of this movie but, from all reports, it was not representative of the medium - probably about as good as how I remember seeing it in not so good projection at the local dollar cineplex. My, that was an unhappy experience! From the look of the Blu-ray, I would guess that some effort went into re-imagining this movie for
high-def. Colors are bold, Blacks are deep. Everything looks clean and sharp. I can say with some certainty that I've never seen The Last Starfighter looking this good. But, hold on a moment – perhaps, too good. A little too smooth, perhaps. Could this be the dreaded DNR at work! I daresay. Still, I am not deterred. The spongy look seems to fit somehow with the territory. Perhaps I am merely making excuses. Doesn't matter.
Image gets a 7/8 - good to hear it's a step up. ....I wonder about the DNR comment though?

He thinks the standard soft filtering of the early/mid 80s is DNR. It's impossible to tell from the screenshots what, if anything was actually done post processing.

The previous HD DVD was sourced from the 1999 transfer that did have DNR however

Thanks Jeff, is it safe to say that this blu-ray wasn't sourced from that 1999 transfer?

As for the extras, can't wait for them

Thumbs up

Glad to hear it's improvement over the HD-DVD. I'm definitely picking this up on the 18th...

That's truly special when a cast/crew of a movie comes back after so many years to revisit their experiences. Certainly ads to the nostalgia as a viewer who had seen this movie time and time again. Definate, buy for me.

Or it makes you feel really old The last thing I say Lance Guest in was the 15th anniversary doc, and before than an episode of the Wonder Years

Don't forget his appearance in the brilliant JAWS: THE REVENGE.

Is the January 5th, 2010 release of this any different? It's packaged with the DVD and costs less than the stand alone BD

Anyone else think this Blu could've been a lot better? It's not the worst transfer I've seen, but color timing seems off in certain scenes, and Universal applied so much DNR to the film that it literally makes the picture look 'waxy.' I've only held onto my copy because it has a new documentary that wasn't on the collector's edition dvd.

Having seen both DVD+Blu-ray pack and stand-alone Blu-ray, which has all the special features? I had the HD DVD and it was missing some bonus feature that the DVD had.

I was thinking of picking this up since fry's seems to have a decent price on both editions.

Which has the most features? I would buy the DVD+Blu-ray pack if there's DVD only features... Does it matter which to get?

Both the recent 25th anniversary DVD and Blu-ray have identical bonus features...You can buy the 2-pack and just give the DVD away, trade it, or sell it. I bought the Blu only, but that was back when it first came out, and it wasn't offered in a 2-pack at the time...

I think like Robocop, it could be better. Not sure how much though. Wasn't this always a "soft" movie, even in theaters? I also loved the documentary and it alone made this purchase worthwhile to me(I didn't have the DVD though). I'm also considering building that arcade cabinet, because a guy online has made The Last Starfighter arcade game.

I'm a geek, I know.

Confirmed. There is nothing on the DVD that wasn't carried over to the BD.
