While there most likly has been a reduction over the span of the past 7 monthes [notably the output increase for blue laser diodes], it's quite obviously still a loss-leading product, even at the current pricepoint.

It costs them ~800$ for the 20gb.
That was before it even started selling.

It's far cheaper than that now.

More current would be nice, especially since we know the blu-ray drive costs have gone down.

One thing I do want to mention though.

That article was from the same day they started selling...

[ bah I lied ]
It's from 5 days after it started selling in japan, and one day before it started selling in the US. Not sure where I misread the date on it, but there ya go.

Sony also now has plans for an 80-gig model for the original $599 price in August!!!

The 60-gig model price cut seems to be confirmed!!!

One of my friends is planning to get a PS3 later this year. He will be most pleased!

it is confirmed - Sony has announced to AP that starting 7/10 the 60G version will be $499.99 and sometime in August 80G version will be $599.99 bundled w/Motorstorm. I read it on Gamespots website

Best Buy will refund you the difference within 30 days. 499$ American for a ps3 is amazing.

Great price. It will help to speed up sales, and another price cut next year will send it flying!

I noticed that game stop still has 20gb models on their website, I wonder if those will be discounted?

Possibly. They could sell them for $399 if they wanted to.

I've read that there isn't a price cut for overseas, but I would expect the news of the price cut in the US to dampen sales in Europe. I know it would make me want to wait to see if a cut was coming if I was over there.

I may wait for this price cut to filter through and then try to find a good price on a used PS3 for my bedroom (I already have one for my theater room). I consider it the best player out there.

You know the stores had to know it was coming. I hit Target this morning for a couple things on my way to work and there it was, the PS3 was at $499!

Now all they need to do is start cranking out some more compelling, exclusive games to really get this thing going!

Looks like the 60GB model might be out of production and the new 80GB PS3 model this fall might replace the 60GB version. The $499 price will make the PS3 more attractive. You would think Sony would drop the list price of the BDP-S300 to $399. This price cut will increase sales of the PS3 while lowering sales of the BDP-S300. Since the BDP-S300 and the PS3 are the same price now, many people will buy the PS3 instead unless the BDP-S300 drops to a list price of $399.
Most DVD players are around $50 today with the PS2 DVD-ROM costing $129. Most likely many standalone BLU-RAY players in the future will be cheaper in cost then the PS3.

Why drop the S300 any further when they're selling out of places quickly enough with 1-2 month restock times?

Exactly.

Blu-Ray is hardly in the postion of needing desperate firesales on their hardware like Toshiba is with their HD-DVD players.
