REAL good advice there, champ.

It's not the PS3 and it's definitely NOT because he doesn't have a 1080p set. It's in his settings somewhere. His equipment is more than capable of producing stunning BD picture quality if set-up correctly.

Forgive my ignorance if I'm wrong, not an expert on these things.
Still it can be 16x9. If the pixels are not square, any aspect can be designed with 1024x768 pixels. It is a matter of rescaling 1280x720 or 1920x1080 to map on to 1024x768 pixel grid.

Bingo!

Unless his TV has scaling issues (which I'm sure it doesn't, Panny makes very nice TV's) why would you other people tell him to set his PS3 to any other resolution?! Why downscale in the PS3 to 720p just to have his TV upscale again to native resolution?!

Sure, it's always good to try all options, but unless the TV had scaling flaws, always try to send the native resolution from the disc for those non standard resolution TV's.

I have a 1366x768 plasma, however it will not accept 1080p, only 1080i and 720p. I am forced to use 720p because my display will not properly deinterlace the 1080i signal. I assure you, the picture is still beautiful.

Most BD players will not allow the output to be set to 1080p unless the HDTV can support that resolution. My HDTV has a resolution of 1366x768 and will not display any resolution over 1080i. therefore, my player will not output 1080p since my display does not support this resolution. I have set my player to 720p and the picture quality on my HDTV is very good and much better than 480i or 480p.

Probably people overlook the fact that the TV set is 1024x768 and 720p has to be rescaled again.

In this case, 720p could be better than 1080i, depending on the quality of the interlace/deinterlace process.

I have a 768p Panny too which I feed a 1080p signal. Here's my take on it. To scale down to 768p its removing information. If you input a lower signal it will basically make up information to add to the existing information to scale up to the native resolution.

There's no need to scale down to 720p just to have it scaled back up. You should always want the best signal sent in. You would not want a 1080i signal sent in this scenario because it has to be deinterlaced, downconverted, and then upconverted to the native resolution. Most sets are horrible at this sort of processing, so why do it when its totally unnecessary? Watch an over the air 1080i signal like an NFL game and you will see how your TV handles this scenario.

Now, in the OP's case the resolution of his set is actually a tad lower than 720p so a 720p or a 1080p signal will be downscaled. Blu-ray discs are recorded at a native 1080p so there's no need to have the player scale it to 720p just for the TV to scale it even further.

Yes, there are many factors to consider. My recommendation to the OP is to test all options listed and select the best based on his/her opinion. When you do the tests, use the same seating position. Try to be close (about 5' to 6' from a 50" set).

I wonder what cable the OP has connected to his TV. He does not need an HDMI cable but if he is using RCAs it would explain his issues.

It is HDMI. Check the first post.

Nice to hear from the OP again...
