It looks like many of these are coming down the pipe, so hopefully it'll help more people in different generations and demographics jump on to BD. My dad, for one, is anxious for some of the classic war movies (Stalag 17) and sci-fi (Day the Earth Stood Still, Them!) before investing in Blu.
You're right on both counts. It seems a lot of the movies people on here act excited about are good for showing off the technical benefits of their HT system, or simply look spectacular, but their overall quality from the critical side is ... well ... let's just say they aren't canidates to dislodge anything on the AFI Top 100 list.

The studio releases seem geared to a couple of overlaping demographics: game platform owners (most blu-ray players are PS3's) and early adaptors. I'm guessing that they figure that's where the money is. But if the studios want to expand their audience to a wider group, they have got to offer more to folks like your dad - and me.

Here's an example that might interest your dad. On this site under the "Movies" link, if you click on "war" there are 30 titles listed for Blu-Ray. However, look at 4 on the list that don't even have release dates yet: The Bridge on the River Kwai, The Guns of Navarone, Lawrence of Arabia, and Platoon. There are probably more Oscars there than all the released ones in that group of 30 combined but the studios appear in no hurry to get them out there (though I think I saw that Navarone will be released in Europe on Oct. 1).

All it will take to put the final nail in the coffin of HD DVD is to put the following on blu-ray:

Batman Begins
The Fly
Die Hard (the other 3 are crap)
Predator
Alien Quadrilogy
Star Wars (won't happen for another 5 years anyway)
Spiderman 1, 2 & 3
Highlander (the other 3 are crap)
Leon, The Professional
The Matrix Trilogy
X-Men 1 & 2
Daredevil, the director's cut (yes it is a good movie)
Men In Black I & II
The Addams Family
The Addams Family Values
The Tick tv series
War Of The Worlds
Vanilla Sky
Kill Bill Vol. 1 & 2
Minority Report
A.I.
Poseidon

I'm sure there are others that I will think of later...

Cool

By Xmas hd-dvd will be dead and buried. No, actually they'll probably be floating around, like driftwood from a shipwreck. You'll see that it's there, but you just won't give a damn. The Blu Army marches on......

Please remember few of the above mentioned titles have been announced for release by Christmas 2007 and in reality this thread is another one of those "titles I would like released" Blu-ray is clobbering HD-DVD and I would suggest for Blu-ray to blow HD-DVD out of the water it will take Universal to go neutral or the Blu-ray players to under the price of the HD-DVD players and with more features.. All of this is unlikely before Christmas. The other factor would be Microsoft giving up, as it's suspected they are bank rolling HD-DVD and for no other reason than to cause the demise of both optical formats. Sorry Microsoft it ain't going to happen, at least not in the foreseeable future.

Default in agreement here

this holiday will be a chance for people to see affordable players and more movie selections and get more people on board ,advertisement ,heavy adds ,radio, whatever it takes ,its all about marketing ,the look and the sound of perfect will be when hddvd is next to the laserdisc at the smithsonian.

When is Boondock Saints 2 supposed to be released? And do you have a link to it?

Jurassic Park Universal (best they can do)
Most of these movies has been hinted by the studios within next 12 months max so christmas i think will be a good time

I think the choice would be obvious for anyone
Thats a big leap with the Universal releases seeing that they havent even looked blu-rays way. lol But I hope that your dreams come true. I would love to see Jurassic Park in stunning 1080p

Transformers Rock-ed just a little Michael Bay humor for you. Paramount has to realize that uncompressed audio is the only thing that will cut it in the era of Blu Ray/HD-DVD. This will sell like gangbusters when it comes out.

I think Sin City 2 was cancelled. Even if this is incorrect Disney owns Sin City not the Weinstiens. No reason to believe Sin City won't be available this year.
