Was planning a trip out this year, but that most likely won't happen. I do need to go soon as my father is getting on in years. When I do, I'd like to meet up with Richteer and we've discussed that.

Thank you Jason! It's most definately still a work in progress, but so far I'm enjoying it and hopefully I can manage some additions in the not too distant future.

Not really all that expensive, but it sure sounds like it !!!! I would love to have one of their offerings !!!!

None the less I do love the Yamaha sound when it comes to AVR's. Wish I would have stayed with Yamaha when I did the AVR upgrade with HDMI back in the day. But, Onkyo was the first to market then with all the features.

Enjoy !!!
Hi Andrew! This year was supposed to be the year for some major upgrades, but it hasn't panned out that way. My audio budget was eaten up and used as a down-payment for a new car and now I have car payments, which I haven't had in several decades. Climbing back up slowly and perhaps next year will see a good change. I had planned on a new TT (Marantz TT-15S1), then a better Phono Preamp and so on. This will have to wait for now. As for the Yamaha AVR, I'm very happy with it as it gives me all of the features I was looking for. They are also very good from a customer-service perspective. I've sent them the odd question and they returned to me within 24hrs each time.

Although my speakers are not the caliber of yours, I do listen to vinyl with the subwoofer, and the 'bottom' that it produces really makes me appreciate the beauty of analog sound. I certainly understand the purist-view of using straight, 2-channel operation without a sub, though. I have a feeling that a choice of sub for you, when that time comes, will not come quickly, but only after much thought and consideration.

I see you have two turntables now. Maybe you've gone over it before, but I am curious as to why. Does one have a moving magnet cartridge, while the other uses moving coil? I'm sure there's a very esoteric and poignant reason you do. Please elaborate for all of us vinyl junkies!
Hi Rob! I'm really excited about my experimentation with the speaker TOE-OUT positioning. My intial impressions are that it has made a positive difference. I'm finding that the overall depth and three-dimentionality has improved significantly, and the lower frequencies are tighter and even more pronounced. I'm going to leave them for another week (perhaps 2) and then go back to see if my assertion is correct.

My original Revolver Rebel Red is approx. 30 yrs old and showing some signs of age. As such I wanted to get another one and basically use it for spare parts. These tables aren't easy to come by and when the Rebel Black came up I jumped on it. I'll have more on this subject in a few days.

Hi Riff! Yes I have this album, still sealed and all, but am familiar with it. It will no doubt find some spins on my TT relatively soon.

Thank you all for your kind words and comments!

Default YPAO Speaker Phase?

I posted in SoundFreak's thread about speaker phase, but I thought I'd ask my good friends here to see what you can make of this.

Yesterday I repositioned my speakers slightly to make sure their placement was 100% equidistant (width apart, depth from rear, and angle of Toe-OUT). As such, I reran the YPAO and for the first time ever it reported that my LF was out-of-phase. I checked all my wiring and it was correct (of which I had no doubt) and reran the YPAO again. This time it reported that BOTH speakers were out-of-phase. I know that regardless of what the YPAO is reporting, everything is connected properly and there is no issue with the sound quality I'm getting. So what gives?

Could it be because my speakers are in a Toe-OUT alignment that YPAO is reporting out-of-phase?

John

PS~ Speakers are exacly 102" (8'6") apart from centre of each speaker. They are exactly 17" forward of the wall behind them and I have incorporated a slight 1" Toe-OUT alignment.

I was just talking to my wife about your collection this weekend and telling her how I wished I could start looking at vinyl as an addition to my setup. But alas, I don't have any room in my current room and no room anywhere in the house for a dedicated 2-channel setup.

Thank you Sir! The whole setup brings me much pleasure, and I hope to expand on it over time. I certainly have the 'upgrade-itis" bug, but not the dollars to make it quite happen just yet. All in good time though!

Hi Lou! My collection has been 40 years in the making, and I'm still buying! I guess I'm addicted to vinyl! If space constraints at the moment make getting into vinyl a problem, then I might suggest the next best option.....SA-CD! I only recently got involved with this format and I am very definately impressed by the much improved sonics over CD. Like every other format there are good releases and not so good ones, but overall SA-CD is a wonderful medium and one I'm happy to have incorporated.

John as regards to your YPAO oddity, where is your mic placed? Try moving it, even if it is ever so slightly as I've had the same problem in the past with my Yammy. As good as the YPAO is at getting levels and distances quite accurate (and it is good), it can easily be fooled into getting the phase calculation wrong.

Audyssey has the same problem and there are threads that say if you have confirmed that the terminals are correct ignore it by clicking next. Personally, I have never come across the out of phase error.

Have you done a Google search on it?

I have much love and respect for your system (especially the Totems). I love 2 channel audio myself. One member has heard my system in 2 channel and was suprised that I only had 2 speakers on! Two channel music is wonderful and your totems are beast - I've heard that model at length - beautiful! I'm moding my Snells, installing a couple of audio note ports and seeing if my bass extension gets greater (the AN-E's in a corner are supposed to go down to 17hz !!!! If I can get into the 20's with this mod - I'm set). Keep up the good work!

Thanks for the suggestions on the mic placement guys! I took careful measurements of everything, EXCEPT the mic placement, which I placed at ear level in my seating position. It's entirely possible that it may have been off by a few inches (although not more). I will rerun the YPAO again a little later and see that results it gives me.

I do have a copy of Jennifer's Famous Blue Raincoat, but I have to check on the release. Cisco doesn't ring a bell, so it may not be that release. The Hunter is an album I've yet to hear, but I'm intrigued. I'm also intrigued by the last Maria Muldour effort, which got great reviews and is something that may take precedence as I have always enjoyed her vocal style. Thanks Rich!

Hi Rich! Thanks for the kind words and yes, I'm discovering in their new placement position a whole new dimension to their sound and ability to get even better. I am very, very encouraged by the new Toe-OUT placement.

I would be remiss if I didn't point out that it was Rich (Richteer) who got me to think about this. He mentioned some time ago when he received his ML Spires, that he positioned them with a slight Toe-OUT. I always knew that I could get more out of my Totems, but space won't allow me to spread them further apart. So I remembered Rich's comment and thought I'd give that a try. Like I said, so far I'm very encouraged by this attempt.

John
