Recently I've started noticing some of the HD-DVD fans who post at AVS beginning to ascribe the sales differences between Blu-ray and HD-DVD disc to demographics. Specifically, by their "analysis" of movies that have sold on the two formats, these posters have been categorizing the Blu-ray demographic essentially as rubes, pimply-faced Spinoli types and unsophisticated people who cannot appreciate the finer things in life. And of course the HD-DVD demographic is described as sophisticated folks who appreciate the finer things.

Perhaps with Denon coming out with Blu-ray products some of the sophisticated HD-DVD aficionados will deign to go partially Blu and join us rubes and peasants.

Apparently one of the finer things they aren't demanding is quality encodings.

A high end RAID in a SAN configuration supporting an iSCSI setup and hot swapping of drives, auto data rebuild and triple bit detection and automatic double bit correction can easily cost over $5 per gigabyte.

It's not the inexpensive, enterprise quality drives (not the same as consumer level drives) that are the cost drivers. It is the custom hardware and software to support a truly high availability system.

If I could get the kind of SAN RAID systems I need for less than $1 per GB I'd be a major hero with almost every organization I touch.

Now for your personal PC you certainly will not have to spend anywhere near that for a 2TB system.

I can setup a 2T RAID with four 500GB drives for around $400. You can get a 500GB SATA 3gbs drive for $100 from Newegg.

From today's Digital Bits, Bill Hunt shows this graphic and says:
Quote:
Also, could this be Denon's forthcoming Blu-ray Disc player, or is it just a marketing/design mock-up? Almost certainly, it's the latter. But the Coroflot industrial design website has posted photos of a BD player (the DVD-HD8910) and a new 7.1 media center/receiver as well (the AVR-HD8910). The text indicates that the receiver comes equipped with a 2TB built-in hard drive (!) and a direct connection to the iTunes music store. And both are... well, darned funky looking. Here's a gander...

This image is taken from a full-page Denon brochure for the units, available here. Real or not (and we think it's almost certainly not - it's just a design flight of fancy), it's certainly... well, interesting. Yikes!

DVD-Audio, also known as DVD-A, is a digital format for delivering very high-fidelity audio content on a DVD.

Very cool, very contemporary. It will be interesting to see what this bad boy will cost.

Perhaps you should go into the business. You'd no doubt drive Denon into bankrupcy in short order.

Hey, it's not the HD-DVD players fault. It's the discs, but nothing a little boiling in hot water won't fix! Just throw em on the stove while wifey is cooking up the carrots and you'll be good to go by the end of dinner

This is not a new phenomenon (sp??). They've been trying to paint BD folks like this for a while now.

While I currently use the PS3 and have Underworld: Evolution as one of my discs (I guess that implies I'm a pimply faced teenager, with no taste), I'd bet have higher annual compensation than the top 500 HD DVD fanatics combined over at AVS. As far as appreciating the finer things in life, I smoke fine aged cigars that cost more per stick than their HD DVD discs cost them.

Bottom line, it's best to just ignore the idiots over at AVMS.
