For me, story comes before everything else. Blu-ray may be about picture and sound, but movies are still about story, and no clean picture or sound can take the place of that. If I think a movie is great, I'm buying it, because I think story transcends any "medium" or "format." Having exceptional PQ/AQ is an added bonus

I buy movies I like, PQ and AQ has little to do with it. I am replacing all my DVDs, Im pretty anal that way. Take Gremlins for example people were up in arms about the PQ... I bought it anyway...why? because I needed to replace the DVD. Because the fact of the matter is, if you dont like the PQ it is still better than the DVD.

This reminds me of discussions the audio community had in the hi-fi "heyday" of the 80's, one of which I believe was addressed in Stereophile (or Absolute Sound?). The topic at that time was "Would you prefer to listen to high fidelity recordings of songs that you liked somewhat or marginally, or songs that you really liked that were recorded poorly?" The average person would obviously select the second choice. However, audiophiles being what they are, and having the investment in gear (I put about $15K into mine), many opted for the first choice. There were actually badly recorded songs that I liked a great deal that I no longer played on my system, while I listened to others I normally wouldn't have because of frequency extension, soundstage, separation and presentation of voices and instruments, etc. Now that high fidelity video is here, a similar argument could be made. Of course, everyone on this forum loves movies, but I think many members occasionally appreciate pushing the A/V capabilities of their equipment utilizing material with less than stellar performances.

Almost all my blu rays I blind bought because of the PQ and AQ. Granted I missed a lot of movies in theaters, but not having seen them, made me want to see how good they could look and sound. Most my movies though, I factored in if I would actually like the movie before I just bought a crap movie with outstanding PQ and AQ.
Here's the list of Blu-rays I own that I "blind" bought for PQ and AQ and why: Australia (I like both Nicole Kidman and Hugh Jackman & love Australia) AVP:Requiem (I liked the first AVP movie/big fan of the Predator movies) Casino Royale (I missed this in theaters and wanted to see it) Gone Baby Gone (I heard it was good, and Morgan Freeman is in it) Hellboy II (I liked the first movie) I Am Legend (I missed this in theaters and wanted to see it) Kung Fu Panda (I missed this in theaters and wanted to see it) Madagascar 2 (I liked the first movie) Max Payne (I enjoyed playing the game, so I thought I'd give it a shot) Rambo: The Fight Continues (I missed this in theaters and wanted to see it) Shoot 'Em Up (Sounded like a good movie) Speed Racer (I loved the original animated series, and this ties in with it) Sunshine (My good friend highly recommended this to me) Starship Troopers (I never got the chance to see this way back when) The Brothers Grimm (I've seen bits of it before and liked the take on it) The Fifth Element (I never seen it and my friends recommended it) The Incredible Hulk (I missed this in theaters and wanted to see it) The Kingdom (My brother told me it was good and I like Jennifer Garner) The Waterhorse: Legend of the Deep (The Lochness monster, lol) Tropic Thunder (I missed it in theaters and wanted to see it) Wall-E (It's Disney Pixar, come on!) Wanted (I missed it in theaters and wanted to see it) Thank you for tuning in... ![]() |

just wondering...for all you out there who said you didnt think Transformers deserved more than a 2.5 (as it was given on the website review), will you buy this for AQ/PQ? because 2.5 is not good enough to buy on blu ray then, is what i am reading? just wondering what the concensus was out there.
i mean, Fallen is def not a great pic, but for the special effects/PQ/AQ, this is def worth picking up. but i think transformers 2 is a rare occurrence for me to buy a movie on blu just for aq/pq because the movie wasnt all that. but im an 80s child and there is just something about seeing optimus on hd |

im not saying there is a trap, but i think in certain instances, and not with everyone, some people will pull the trigger for a movie, such as ROTF, for 17 or so bucks even if the movie wasnt a top notch flick. but has to be a unique situation, ie transformers and the fact that you played with those toys for so many years, the story doesnt have to be that great.

If I have any interest in the movie at all and the PQ and AQ are good, then I'll buy it. It doesn't matter if I've seen the film before or not.
On the opposite subject, if I love the movie that's being released, and it turns out to be a crappy Blu-ray, I will not buy it. |

no, I have rented movies just because of video/audio though, like Casino Royal and iRobot, I rented those movies just because I wanted to see how amazing they looked (I had seen both movies before and enjoyed then, but would have never rented them if they had average video and audio). I only buy movies that I like though, but if a movie I really liked had really bad video and audio, I would probably not buy it and wait for a better version or save money and get it on DVD if it was that bad.

People buy movies for all sorts of reasons.... you can't simplify it to an A or B choice..... I certainly would never buy a movie solely based on PQ/AQ...... If a lot of people like it, I'll buy it even if I don't like it..... but if it's a film most people don't like, that I also don't like..... then PQ/AQ and price are not an issue.... I simply won't own it. |

Transformers 2, I will grant, is an awesome looking and sounding movie, but it is also one of the worst films I've seen recently. Heck, I hated the first one and I won't pay real money for that either and the sequel was worse.
I used to work at Good Guys and we'd bring our own Laser Discs for demos (yeah, I'm old). Transformers 2 would be perfect for in store demos. But that's about it. Last edited by Harlock415; 10-14-2009 at 09:39 PM. |
