Ok the technical answer to this is simple. Yes, if it's a 1:1 image copy from an original source, meaning from an actual physical original BD disc of the movie, then yes, it will have the exact same quality and all the bells and whistles as the retail you buy from Best Buy, Wal-Mart, etc. there are some technical obstacles you have to overcome to create a full image and save it on a hard drive and i will not get into it as it's taboo in this forum. Yes it sucks, yes it's possible, yes it's out there for the taking. And you would have to buy dual layer discs to burn anything over 25 gigs for 1:1 obviously, which cost just about the same per disc as it would to buy the retail, more if the retail is on sale, so right now it's not worth it at all. One day, maybe, when the prices on BDs come down like it did for blank DVD media. There are also the re-encoded rips that do diminish the video quality and you loose some/most of the sound tracks available with the retail copies. Usually the lossless tracks since they are the biggest. That is reason alone for me not want to download BD rips.

$2 for a 50gb bd-r? the cheapest i've seen a 50gb bd-r is around $9
unless if you re-encode it to fit on a 25gb bd-r

Actually that was the 25gb disc, because if their is one thing i have learned about people who do this, compression is no enemy of theirs, so 50gb would not be a necessity
But to most people other then those that frequent forums like these, it would still be 1:1 on everything they care about. Sucks but thats how it is.
Hell even when i go to the theatre i am thinking ugh if only this was BLU, lossless sound, on MY system but most people do not think this way.

Many blu rays that are ripped without the menus and that only contain the main movie and a single lossless audio track will fit on a single layer disc. Not all of them, but most of them, and the ones that don't, require little compression to make it fit.

When it comes to BD's however i have yet to see one that looked close, most the time they are DVD files labeled as BD's, much in the way most my friends also have mislabeled music on their IPODS.

I don't know why you care though OP, obviously something about that got to you and you feel the need to defend you purchase, DON'T. Either you are happy with what you got or your not, and what he is doing doesn't hurt you, so who cares.

I hear similar things quite often, but that does not mean that i don't enjoy my BLU's at home or their RIPs when i am at their house. Frankly this is in no way a loss to anyone but the burner who is losing quality and since he doesn't even know that, well...

P.S. Think laws need to be changed so i can legally backup my DVDs like i do with my music, it's BS that i have had to buy multiples of the same season of a show to replace one disc, i paid for the content, i should be able to secure that investment in spite of a easy to damage container.

@Travis- true illegal downloads of music suck to a critical listener, but their are many ways you can get a 1:1 copy of your own store bought material and still have the advantages of an IPOD, and if space is an issue highbitrates and new compression formats can make even sized files sound better
Spoken like someone who has had quite of bit of illegally downloaded content.

Good job, thief.

sorry guys but you are waaaay off base here....

While running the risk of getting banned from the forums..

1) blank blu-ray media is about 2.80 a disk now. Here is a 15 pk for 39.99

http://computers.pricegrabber.com/st...m90725594.html

2) the MPAA encoding has been broken by 3rd party software and any movie can be ripped to a computer. I will not give out specifics on the program but just do a search on the internet. Also, the ripping process is about 45 minutes.

3) Most movies are over 25GB. Which means they have to be compressed. Again without giving out names there is compression software that also reencodes at a very high rate. Almost a 1:1 comparison. You would not be able to tell the difference. This step is the longest as it takes up to 6 hours for some movies. Go to sleep.

4)Burning out to a BD-25 takes about 40 minutes.

5)Many a websites have cover art and disc art. Again I wont give away the names.. buy nice paper to print out the cover art.. buy DVD labels to stick on the DVD.

6) Blu Ray cases can be bought cheap.. usually 50 for about $25.00.

Put it all together and you have an exact duplicate. Your friend is right. Please dont boot me from this site.

Oh and the movies come from Netflix or Blockbuster.

I also dont advocate doing this as it is illegal to break copyright laws. But it is doable.

Total cost for this is about 4.00 a blu ray. You can see the reason why people do this.

the compression is minimal. Most of the compression in fact is removing about 15GB of data from the disc (the extras, unwanted audio, subtitles) once its under 25GB you are free to burn. I never saw a disc that had bad audio or picture quality. Again, almost 1:1.. you would not know the difference.

In fact.. if you go on Ebay there are a ton of people who sell these things illegally. Ever wonder how people can sell GI Joe for like $10 on Blu Ray today? That person probably burned it, shrink wrapped it and is looking to make a profit. Highly illegal. Wouldnt advise anyone to do that crap.

But the point is.. its out there.. you couldnt tell.

classic! "rock on" or my friends one: "i hear ya", are great phrases: all they say is "i'm here, but i'm not siding with you, nor am i siding against you, i'm just here". then the person gets pissed that you're not saying "i agree," but then realizes they cant get pissed because you didn't say "i dont agree"

I never said it didn't exist. I am well aware of what is out there, we all are, Google isn't a secret website

There is no reason to discuss it here any further other then telling the OP that his friend is a tool, which most have done. Your post was more of a "look what I know although I don't actually do it....allegedly" and really had nothing of value to add to the original topic

This will be my last post on this topic.

Again I wish a mod would put this thread out of it's misery.

Ha... I think my post was very valueable to the conversation. There are many many people on here throwing out lies and inconsistencies they know nothing about. I am coming from the other side of the fence. By the way.. the topic headline was help me prove my friend wrong... I answered the topic question.. his friend is right.

Seems "most" newer BD's have actual movie files larger than 25GB, often +30GB. Look at TV series too, they are often around 40GB per disc.

Unless you are talking about a disc with TONS of trailers, deleted scenes, etc... all in HD, I don't see how you could pull anywhere near 15GB off a disc. I mean, maybe a Asian Bluray where they have 7 different lossless tracks.

But... I admit, this is not my area. Only thing I have ever backed-up were a very small handful of DVD's I already owned.

As for how a compressed Bluray would look? These compression methods, I assume, are somewhat rough. If studio;s can't seem to get it perfect with all the space they have, why would some basic program look any good? I mean, throwing a basic 5-10% compression acrossed the whole disc, I would imagine would leave serious macroblocking on the heavy action scenes. HD-Lite?

Obviously it can be done, but I would simply have to wonder, why?
