Reference Level.

I jest. My partner loves loud music, but doesn't like it loud for movies - which I can understand. If I'm not on my own, then I'll stick it into Night Mode to trim those lower frequencies a bit and make it a bit more bearable for my boring family lol.

If I'm on my own then I will crank it bigstyle, but rarely to 85 db SPL reference level - I want to keep my ears in as best shape as possible so that I can use them in the future !

With an SPL meter this generally = out to 80-100db but i like my action movies more on the side of 90-100db
apparently i had already posted in this thread.

Red face I guess I'm getting old

I've noticed not alot of people have or use a SPL meter....And just give the volume numbers off their reciever.....Oh well. But I find myself listening between 75-83 dbs or more recently between 72-80 dbs , Unless I have company .....Then it gets bumped up,sometimes quite a bit

IIRC my receiver's test tones hit 75 dB at Volume level 53, as measured with my SPL meter-- it's an Onkyo 502, so no fancy dB display. I usually listen to blurays at 40--42, so fairly quiet.

The dB display on fancier preamps/receivers is only informative if it's been calibrated. Maybe the auto setup routines already do this.

Nick
Some speakers are more sensitive than others. And if an amplifier is being overdriven, it can sound quite loud. A high end, perfectly calibrated system can make hearing loss very pleasant.
