Yeah, I think that's why I didn't end up liking SGU. I love SG-1 and SGA but they were fun, light-hearted sci-fi shows and SGU is trying to be too dark and too much like a sci-fi soap-opera. I didn't like BSG for the same reasons.

i'm a long time stargate fan. seen every single ep/movie of SG-1 and SG-A. saw the 1st 3 eps of SGU and decided to wait for the Blu-Ray. i'm hoping that they would have at least packaged season 1 TOGETHER... but alas it's going to be split up into 1.0 and 1.5.

my guess is that there's gonna be a season 1 boxset or maybe even complete series boxset =P.

Which is why I like it, SG-1 was derivative sci-fi in all its non-glory,(IMO).

I for one am glad this show broke from the previous molds but i have not seen an original sci-fi anything since i was born. It is all a rip off by writers of what they enjoyed in the genre with their own touch to it, and of course formula's that have done well.

I also agree about fanboys, hate them all, they are the reason sci-fi doesn't do well anymore, when your target base market is nothing but whiners and crybabies why make the show. If you want SG-1 watch SG-1, if you want something new watch this.... but for the love of god don't hate on the show for what its not, at least hate on it for what it is. IMO sci-fi is going down hill fast thanks to the die hard fanboys.
Couldn't agree more. I see that kind of childish bickering on the TrekBBS forum, which is why I rarely go there any more.

The biggest enemy to scifi themed shows or movies, is their own fanbase. Sci-fi fans can be so nitpicky that they just can't sit back and enjoy these media for the pure entertainment they are. They gotta sit there and complain about everything. And ironically, it's usually the acting, scripts, or plot, whether or not they're rip-offs of some other sci-fi/fantasy story.

The most original sci-fi story that I've seen in a long time is District 9, and even some of that had been done before, like the old series V.

As for any of the Stargate shows, I love them all. Yes, they take a bit of time to get going. Especially SG-1, where the first season was just your basic "alien of the week" series, but once the big arcing story lines got going, it was extremely addictive. With Stargate Atlantis, the thing that kept it going was that it introduced the enemy alien species right off the bat. Well, same thing with SG-1, but Atlantis had that alien threat through-out. With SG-U, we don't yet have that alien threat, but with the mid-season cliffhanger that gave us an abandoned crashed alien spacecraft, we'll hopefully start getting an external threat to the crew. But so far, it's kind of been like Stargate: Voyager.

I think that's another bias I have against SGU. I think of it as the reason for the cancellation of SGA. Maybe they're unrelated but it's hard to swallow when SGA was just hitting its prime and it was much more "stargate" (to me anyway).

Congrats on meeting them. Was it a fan convention or something of that nature?

Anyway, as for the thread topic, the price didn't seem too high to me at first but I guess considering it's half a season, it's a little high.

I actually like the show.

Besides, any show that uses a song from Flogging Molly in it can't be all that bad.

It's a good show and it's getting better. It may not have the humor of previous Stargate shows, but it has an intriguing storyline.

The show has been okay so far. I like it much better than what I have seen of Caprica. They only used the Stargate name to draw in the loyal fans. Tone and characterization look much more derived from Battlestar than any prior Stargate show, which appears a conscious choice.

Splitting the home video releases into two separate sets is just wringing every last dollar out of the loyal fan-base. But they set pricing way too high for so few episodes.

I paid $45 for 24 Season 7 on BR - 24 episodes.

$39 for 10 episodes (the 1st episode is the equivalent of 2) is a bit high...

AFA SG-1 and Atlantis on BR. Seasons 8-10 of SG-1 and all of Atlantis were filmed in HD, and you can get the 720p version on iTunes. Who wants to pay for 720p DRM'ed downloads? Not me... I prefer the 1080p discs...

On the other hand, there won't be any Atlantis Blu in the near future or at all. That's why we only get the fan's choice crap.

Unfortunately, the nail's in the coffin for the Stargate Franchise.

According to this article, Michael Shanks (Dr. Daniel Jackson) says there's probably no more SG-1 movies:

http://www.gateworld.net/news/2010/0...ay-not-happen/

it also says that MGM is up for sale....

Also on Gateworld, a whole ton of Stargate props are being auctioned off, including the Stargate itself:

http://www.gateworld.net/news/2010/0...targate-props/

I guess they don't need the props anymore?

Also, the studios are saying that the movies rely on DVD sales, which are tanking, even though fans will buy Stargate movies regardless.

Releasing SGU as half-seasons means DVD/BR sales will tank and confirm their wrong assumptions.

Goodbye, Stargate - at least I have the DVD's (actually watching through SG-1 again - on season 6).

You need to shop around. Amazon US has it for $38.99 which is the lowest price I've seen.

I don't think I'm going to buy SGU after scanning th reviews here. It's a lot like STar trek on how it's going to down. Every star trek series that came out of next generation slowly went downhill.

Is it me or is the premise of SGU similar to Star Trek Voyager?!?!?

They should have kept STargate atlantis going, but I suspect costs were running a little high.

It's NOT just you. That was my first thought as well. I watched the episodes "live" and am mostly ambivolent about them so far. If I hadn't been so intrigued by the cliffhanger, I probably wouldn't be planning on watching it much more once it starts back up.

I didn't watch BSG on purpose because I didn't like how it was filmed/shot...the fact that SGU is, to some degree, Stargate, is the ONLY reason I'm watching it and putting up with the style.
