Hmmm, if I went by how many games I have in my collection the Genesis would win. To be honest I like my Genesis a little bit more. In the end you would have to pry both from my dead cold hands if you wanted them.

I loved my Genesis for classics like Golden Axe and Streets of Fu--in' Rage. Those games rocked so hard.

SNES had Street Fighter II (Championship and Turbo Editions) which gave my friends and I thousands of hours of entertainment in my basement. I can't forget to include NBA Jam which was totally sweet, too.

For me, I think the SNES would have to take the gold medal because of Street Fighter II. We just had a blast with that game and never got tired of playing. It's because of that one game SNES is my number one console of the two.

This is easy. The Genesis was technologically superior.... but the SNES just had more of a fun factor.

+1 both rocked, but nintendo always grabs that fun factor better then the competition.

Streets of rage
Altred Beast
Sonic
Golden Axe etc...

SNES

Supermario World
Super Metroid
Street Fighter
Final Fantasy 3 (US) etc...

good generation for us old school gamers.

That's a good point.

Anyone else notice the similarities between that generation and this one?

Not trying to start anything here mods, but I just find it kinda hilarious.

Funny what happens when you drop $20+ cartridges in favor of $1-2 plastic discs.

Incorrect; The SNES was definitely the more powerful of the 2. I can prove it with comparative specs if asked to, but better yet: do a back to back playtest of Street Fighter 2 Turbo on the SNES versus Street Fighter 2 Special Champion Edition on the Genesis. Mortal Kombat 2 shows it as well.

I had both but got more games on the Super. I probly have more Genesis games on compilations now than I do for my actual Genesis. Of course, I was made especially happy when Sega finally produced a Genesis collection with Streets of Rage and Shining Force.

On the Super I was all about the RPGs and the Super Marios. Or both in one game .

Based on google searches and old magazines so far:

CPU:
Genesis: Motorola 68000 @ 7.61 MHz, Z80 @ 4 MHz.
Super NES: Custom 65C816 @ 3.58 MHz

Advantage: probly the Genesis, but inconclusive as I've yet to determine things like cache size, operations per cycle, etc.

Gfx chip:
Genesis: Gen VDP, speed unknown.
Super NES: 16-bit SN PPU, speed unknown.

Detail: SG / SNES
Max Resolution: 224i / 448i
Max Sprites: 80 / 128
Max Sprite size: 32x32 / 64x64
Color avail: 512 / 32,768
Colors displayed: 64 / 256
Planes: 3 / 4

The Super was capable of Mode 7 animation such as rotation and scaling not possible on the Genesis.

Advantage: Super NES

RAM:
Genesis: 136 kB: 64 Main + 64 Video + 8 Audio
Super NES: 256kB: 128 Main + 64 Video + 64 Audio

Advantage: Super NES

Sound:
Genesis: 8-bit Yamaha YM2612 + Tex Instr. PSG chip, speeds unknown
Super NES: 8-bit Sony SPC700 @ 1.024 Mhz + 16-bit DSP

Genesis had more total sound channels but they were split up; The Super NES had much more Audio RAM and could actually process stereo sound and Left-Right effects. Both could decode digital sound/voice clips.

Advantage: Super NES.

Carts:
Both topped out around 4 MB for game size. There were a couple of Japan only 6 MB games on the Super. They were Tales of Phantasia and Star Ocean 1, which eventually saw US releases on later platforms: GBA, PSP.

And really Don't forget

Ken Griffey Presents MLB
Yoshi's Island
Tecmo Super Bowl
Super Mario All-Stars (probably the first game to bring old classics with updated graphics)
Killer Instinct

The Legend of Zelda: A Link to the Past, really I think thats where it all started.
