Kubrick and AC Clarke were told by NASA we WOULD be there by 2001. I grew up in Houston by NASA and in 1991 was TOLD by NASA employees trying to get us to work for them and make a career out of it that we'd be to Mars by 1997. Simple really. Government cut backs the funding is why space exploration is so far behind. We spend billions on war instead of mankinds most basic instinct of exploration. Sorry. I know that was a little political but you asked lol!
