Yes, Thompson drank a lot and did drugs. Yes, he was instrumental in creating that public persona. But he was also a serious journalist and an outstanding writer. I am glad to see him get attention. I just hope people realize that Fear and Loathing in Las Vegas is not his best story and the best parts of it aren't the drugs but the social commentary. Although the drugs are fun too.

Just pre-ordered Fear and Loathing. I've been waiting for it since I bought my PS3. I tried ordering the import a while back, but I cancelled it. I saw the Gonzo documentary. It is a good piece on Hunter S Thompson. He was quite a unique and interesting person.

DVDBeaver has their review up:

Fear and Loathing in Las Vegas Blu-ray Johnny Depp

The difference between the Blu-ray and DVD is pretty striking, IMHO.

I agree. There is so much more detail in the shot for Blu-ray it is hard to believe I ever thought the DVD looked good. I am seriously considering upgrading but holding on to me Criterion release for the extras.

Like I said before, Ive wanted this on BD since Uni put it out on HD DVD... I have the Criterion DVD and the HD DVD. I just wish the BD would have all the extras the Criterion DVD has, but Im happy its coming out never the less.

Default Same tranfer as HD DVD?

I have the HD DVD still in shrink wrap that I picked up from a bargain bin. Anyone know yet if this is the same transfer being used on the Blu Ray?

Good to see a marked improvement over the Criterion DVD. I was worried it'd be so small it wouldn't be worth it, but now I'll buy the Blu and keep the Criterion for the extras.

My only complaint is, what it up with those generic Universal menus? The Criterion DVD menus put them all to shame. You would think that someone involved would want to put some effort into it.

Its based on true accounts of Hunter and his lawyer's travels to Vegas. They took two different trips there for two different cover stories he was working on for Rolling Stone Magazine.

Sometime in the 1970's, Rolling Stone then published the two accounts which the entitled, Fear and Loathing in Las Vegas: A Savage Journey to the Heart of the American Dream as a two-part article.

of course hunter was known for taking many creative liberties with "true accounts"

I think if you look at this movie as "a drug movie" you're completely missing the point...... It's like saying "It's a Wonderful Life" is a movie about banking

Here is a review on Fear and Loathing ...LINK

Quote:
It's a shame that more effort wasn't put into the extras on this release as the audio and video quality are both excellent. As such, fans of the film will probably want to own this and the Criterion SD release for the extras that their release contains. That said, if you only care about the movie itself, this Blu-ray release is the way to go. The transfer is very strong, the audio is excellent and the film itself still plays incredibly well. Highly recommended.
