I recommend putting Sword of the Stranger high up on your list! Great story, excellent graphics and an incredible audio experience! Love the soundtrack on this one.

It's very hard to just recommend some anime as there's such a broad range of genres within anime. Do you like sci-fi? Love stories? Martial arts?

Anyway, I'll list some of my personal favorites of the past 25 years. Those that are out on blu-ray, I'll mark in blue.

Series:
聖闘士星矢 (Saint Seiya, including the new Lost Canvas series out on blu-ray! One of the anime series that has some of the most hardcore fanbases )
らんま1\2 (Ranma 1/2)
超時空要塞マクロス (Choujikuu Yousai Macross)
キャプテン翼 (Captain Tsubasa: if you like sports anime or soccer, make sure to watch this one)
シティーハンター (City Hunter)
超獣機神ダンクーガ (Choujyuukishin Dan Cougar)
めぞん一刻 (Maison Ikkoku: beautiful love story)

OAV/Movies:
Virtually every Ghibli production comes highly recommended
真救世主伝説 北斗の拳 (Shinkyuuseisyu Densetsu Hokuto no Ken: the 5 new OAV's retelling the Hokuto no Ken story)
Street Fighter (the OAV, not the movie or anime series)

I was going to put this on the list as mandatory, but there was already UY and Ranma up there for the "trilogy":

If I'd said it was one of the few examples of a guy's romantic story, people here would think I was referring to some Seth Rogen slob piece--But no, Godai's story is the story of what guys go through to get the girl, with all the pain, embarrassment and humiliation therein.
(Too bad it only came out as a limited edition over here, and getting to that crucial last volume is now one of THE most frustratingly sought-after disks on the $300-ebay market...And no, no one's getting their hands on mine. )

The early to mid-'90s was when I was really into anime (yes, I also had an anime BBS). Since Utena, Cowboy Bebop, and FLCL, not much has come out that I found particularly memorable. Some exceptions are Spirited Away, Mind Game, and 5 cm Per Second.

One problem I have is that I don't really care for the look of digital anime. I prefer the hand-painted cel animation that came to an end in Japan around 2000.

Ah, happy to see I'm not the only Maison Ikkoku fan out there. I totally agree with you that the story, even though it has it's fun parts, is mainly about the insecurities, pain and embarassement a 'good' guy goes through to get the girl: the distance between them due to her still thinking about her deceased husband, his rival getting in the way, the other tenants at Maison Ikkoku getting in the way all the time (mostly with alcohol thrown in the mix), lateron his student getting an unhealthy crush on him and lots more... perhaps not the situations themselves but the feelings are very, very recognizable. In that regard, its a true work of art.

I bought the Japanese box set, which cost and arm and a leg, but at least I had the entire series all at once.

Ghost in the shell is awesome. It gets a little bogged down in it's own politics and mythology but it's a landmark film for anime. I Don't like how they replaced some parts of the original with the CG in this version but it's really only a minor nuisance.
Watch close and you can pick out all kinds of stuff the Wachowski brothers "Borrowed" for the Matrix.

If you like Sci-fi with great characters I can't recommend Gunbuster enough. Best ending ever.

I've been hedging on the Diebuster and Gunbuster BDs because I don't like the idea of a heavily edited version when I know a more complete one is out there. How likely are either to receive an unedited US release?

With Gunbuster it's also recommended to see Diebuster.

Calling them edited is not really the best way to call them. It's uncut just put into a movie form. But for the actual series for both I say there's a good chance but I don't even think Japan has them yet on Blu-ray.

I agree for the most part. I found the added CGI a little off-putting at first, but can live with it. But yeah, the movie makes little sense at first because it's so heavy with the politics and far-out philosophies. I had to watch it with subtitles on to fully get it.

I've been watching the "Ghost in the Shell: Stand Alone Complex" series these days, for the second time ever. I forgot how awesome it is; it's easier to digest than the movies, and would reccomend it in addition to the movie.

I agree with you here. I have not seen the Gunbuster/Diebuster Blu-ray, but I cant imagine editing 6 hours worth of material to 3 hours can properly tell the story. The review I read on this site only confirms this. The reviewer seemed a bit confused by some of the directorial choices made. They make perfect sense if you watch it in OVA form. I would love for them to give this thing a proper OVA release but for some reason I am skeptical. At least not in the near futere. They already released it as a condensed movie, it is subtitle only, and the prices are still quite high. I don't know if it will ever achieve enough support for a blu-ray of the original version of the works. I'm hanging on to my DVD copies, and hoping a Japanese release has English subs. That'll cost a fortune though.

Yes, quite right. Although the original can stand on it's own, and of the two, Gunbuster is easily my favorite.
