Default Can be more cost effective...

I have done this a lot in the past, but with good reason.

When you have a lot of small children, it's much more cost effective to go and buy the movie than it is to pay a baby sitter upwards of $20-$40, get a few snacks at another $10 or so, then pay close to $20 for two tickets.

So I can buy and own a movie that I want to see for maybe $20, or I can go see it on the big screen for $50-$70 (not including dinner if we REALLY make it a night out).

Sometimes you gotta go for the big screen experience (i.e. Avatar), but I find myself blind buying quite a few movies that I would have liked to have seen at the theaters if I think it's one I'll like to see again and again. If not, I'll rent it first, then maybe try to wait for the price to fall and snag it while I'm out shopping.

For example, I just blind bought Inglourious Basterds, but I waited for the price drop ($16.99), then picked it up and had a nice movie night last Saturday (wife was out, kids were asleep... perfect time for a Q.T. movie! )

In short, yeah, I blind buy more than I probably should, but only titles that I am reasonably sure I am really going to like, and NEVER too many at a time. Gotta space it out so the wife doesn't get too mad... )

Yeah, my most recent example of it was trying to wait for a price drop on the Hurt Locker, and yet I had it and watched on release day. I am better at not giving into impulses as much, but still find taht I give into temptation.

Sometimes I say no before a blu is relased so I can talk myself out of it if it's not one I really love but by the end of the day I find at least one redeeming value in it that makes me go to the store and buy it.

But….by the end of the day, you somehow justified the purchase and it’s in your collection by the time you get home???

i'm currently doing that to myself w/Ong Bak 1 & 2 next week.

i also did it when Gremlins was released as a Target exclusive.....i initially wasn't going to get it, i was gonna wait, but by the end of the day, i was @ Target and picking it up.

I did that today.

I told myself yesterday I was going to buy Green Lantern since it finally dropped to within $1 of my buying price (which I didn't expect to happen for a while). Then earlier this afternoon I was like, nah I don't need to pick that up now, I'll get it sometime down the road.

Well, its in my hands now and my bank account is missing $14.

I went back and forth a little on my only three blind buys as well (Casino Royale and Quantum of Solace for $19 each back in May and Into the Blue for $8 in like October). I decided to buy them, then changed my mind, then talked myself into getting them. Turned out that all three were good buys (imo).

SAW VI I've had since last Thursday and it's AMAZING, even though I already saw it in theaters a couple times. The DTS-HD MA sounds fantastic!!!

I'm renting Surrogates and it'll be at my house from Netflix tomorrow...hopefully it'll be a good movie.

Red face Sometimes.

I do it occasionally for a great way to cheer myself up. But only very rarely. I have been ruined by Amazon, they have all the best prices IMO.

Sometimes I buy something, just so I'll stop thinking about it. It annoys me to have something swimming in my head all day.

To address the real issue at hand (cause I'm not sure if I answered it correctly ), yep, I've done it before. That's why I got "Babylon AD" and "The Spirit" in my collection, even though I know they're bad and I don't really know why I got them.

I only do it if the price is right and during Black Friday time and with the Target $5 off coupon that happened a lot which is why I'm so far behind in viewing. Pretty much never did it with dvd but with Bluray it is becoming a habit.

I have three criteria for buying a movie on Blu-Ray:

1 - The movie has to kick ass. No crappy movies on my shelf ever again.
2 - The disc has to dominate the DVD release. I'm not simply replacing my DVDs just for slightly better video quality.
3 - It has to be on sale or cheap as hell, because I'm cheap as hell.

I try to follow those rules too. But sometimes I slip on rule 3.

well maybe those are rules for you... but for people like me, i never invested much in VHS/LD/DVDs, etc. when i first read/heard about hi-def media in the early 90s... i waited.

yup, been waiting for nearly 20+ yrs =).

i try to follow these as well for the most part.

1: i've weeded out a lot of my dvd collection b/c of the "crappy" movies. bought them, watched them once, never looked @ them again. went from 700+ to below 300 in 1-2 years and try like all hell to avoid doing this again.

2: i'll still buy a dvd if a blu doesn't appeal to me. like today, i bought saw vi on dvd.....b/c (1) i have all the others on dvd and (2) a high def release for a movie like this isn't that important to me.

3: a movie doesn't have to be cheap for me to buy but i won't spend more than $20 on a new release ever again.

I only blind buy on a great deal usually with a movie I have heard was good. Just did it with The Aviator; I don't think I will be disappointed.
