Wow, for once I don't object to any of the main categories. Last year it was Slumdog winning everything, and years before it always seems like I'm rooting for someone (Phoenix in Walk The Line), should enjoy the show.
![]() Really liking the love for Inglourious Basterds and actually had to no idea Pulp Fiction received so many nominations! I've seen six of the ten nominees too so I can be a total snob this year. |

Close Encounters, etc etc etc) so just because it's a blockbuster-- it guarantees nothing. However there's another angle to look at-- the Oscars have been a ratings bust for many years since most nominated pictures the last decade have had little interest to the mass public--- with a popular movie like AVATAR they are expecting audiences to tune in again-- they may give the award to AVATAR for this reason-- yes, it's about $$ again-- but based on viewer ratings... |

I am a little surprised by these. I have seen most, and none really stand out as Oscar worthy IMO. Avatar was pure eye candy; District 9 was really good as was The Hurt Locker and Up. I think this Oscar is a toss up between all mentioned.

Mike there is only one critic (well two back then) worth listening to and we all know who that is. What did Ebert and the late Siskel say about Titanic vs L.A. Confidential? As I have no idea....but it's a toss up with these two in my book but if I HAD to choose one it would be Titanic and this is coming from someone who adores L.A. Confidential. Both are on my top 100 films of all time list.

Saw Avatar for the 2nd time this week end.
The score is not really noticeable on the first viewing because the IMAX and 3D effects are overwhelming, but it is indeed an excellent score, worthy of being at the least nominated. my picks: Best Picture Avatar The Blind Side District 9 An Education The Hurt Locker Inglorious Basterds Precious A Serious Man Up Up in the Air Best Actor Jeff Bridges - Crazy Heart George Clooney - Up in the Air Colin Firth - A Single Man Morgan Freeman - Invictus Jeremy Renner - The Hurt Locker Best Actress Sandra Bullock - The Blind Side Hellen Mirren - The Last Station Carey Mulligan - An Education Gabourey Sidibe - Precious Meryl Streep - Julie and Julia Best Supporting Actor Matt Damon - Invictus Woody Harrelson - The Messenger Christopher Plummer - The Last Station Stanley Tucci - The Lovely Bones Christoph Waltz - Inglorious Basterds Best Supporting Actress Penelope Cruz - Nine Vera Farmiga - Up in the Air Maggie Gyllenhaal - Crazy Heart Anna Kendrick - Up in the Air Mo'Nique - Precious Best Director Kathryn Bigelow - The Hurt Locker James Cameron - Avatar Lee Daniels - Precious Jason Reitman - Up in the Air Quentin Tarantino - Inglorious Basterds Original Screenplay The Hurt Locker Inglorious Basterds The Messenger A Serious Man Up Adapted Screenplay District 9 An Education In the Loop Precious Up in the Air Animated Film Coraline Fantastic Mr. Fox The Princess and the Frog The Secret of Kells Up Cinematography Mauro Fiore - Avatar Bruno Delbonnel - Harry Potter and the Half-Blood Prince Barry Ackroyd - The Hurt Locker Robert Richardson - Inglorious Basterds Christian Berger - The White Ribbon Film Editing Avatar District 9 The Hurt Locker Inglorious Basterds Precious Best Original Score Avatar Fantastic Mr. Fox The Hurt Locker Sherlock Holmes Up Sound Editing Avatar The Hurt Locker Inglorious Basterds Star Trek Up Sound Mixing Avatar The Hurt Locker Inglorious Basterds Star Trek Transformers: Revenge of the Fallen Visual Effects Avatar District 9 Star Trek My Totals: Avatar: 6 (including best director + technicals and score) Up in the Air: 3 (including best actor) The Hurt Locker: 1 (the big one) UP: 1 The Blind Side: 1 (best actress) Inglorious Basterds: 1 Star Trek: 1 Fantastic Mr Fox: 1 (honestly I prefer UP, but I have the feeling that Fox will gather more sympathy) |

I haven't seen The Blind Side, A Serious Man or Precious, but An Education was the best movie I saw this year. It didn't make nearly enough money to win anything though. If the Academy wants to rearrange things they need to take a cue from the Golden Globes. Subdivide Best Picture into different categories--Best Drama, Best Animation, Best Comedy/Musical. It's the only fair way to compare apples to apples and the only way to make both adults and Avatar/TDK/The Matrix, etc. fans happy. There's no basis to compare movies like Up in the Air or An Education to movies like Up or Avatar. Last edited by repete66211; 02-02-2010 at 02:50 PM. |

Avatar was a shoe-in to show off its number of nominations with technical, but seeing Up not get the key Editing and Screenplay necessary for a Picture win is a genuine shock, considering what we were suspecting this year...
![]() I still have faith that reason will prevail--even those who could take or leave Titanic will admit that Avatar Is No Titanic, where Oscar image is concerned--but it looks like we haven't gotten out of the "We've forgotten how to nominate mainstream films" ghetto yet. Quote:
And they did from the fanboys, but then we all said, "Look, people, you know it was just about about Dead Heath, and he got it, and got a big standing ovation, end of story, move on." So nobody minded after that. Quote:
1-5: Avatar The Hurt Locker Up Up In The Air Precious, and Since When Does The Book Credit Get Mentioned In the Freakin' Title?? 6-10 The Blind Side An Education A Serious Man District 9 Inglorious Basterds In other words, 6-10 were all the nominees you'd Think Might Be Up There if you hadn't seen them, based on what everyone was guessing in November....I don't think anyone in the Academy seriously considers Inglorious or District a contender, except that everyone had gotten used to saying it was supposed to be, Serious is only up there on the Coens' past-win name pedigree, and Blind Side is pure FYC hype on the part of the producers. Well, so much for "Star Trek For Best Picture", like they were all hoping the ten-nomination stunt would help spark a revival of mainstream movies being nominated again...At least we know they WANT to, but it's a long twelve-step process back to "Chicago" and "Return of the King" again, and it starts with realizing there's a problem. Hopefully it won't make them do anything desperate and actually give Picture or Director to Avatar, they're not that desperate for the Golden Globes' TV image....But there's still that fear of West Coast voters and the damage they can do. ![]() haha I remember it well, there was debate in regards to picture but overall Titanic was seen as superior. Think about all the technical categories. Screenplay is the only thing LA was clearly better at. It may have had better individual acting performances, although that's debatable, but overall the acting as a whole in Titanic was better, in large part due to the expansive cast. |

Yes, but it has to get both OS/AS and Editing to send the other nominees home in a given year--
Still, it could happen, as none as of the Picture front runners are Directors this year and none of the Directors are Pictures, so either one is a tossup: Usually, in a five-nomination year, the Directors are four of the Pictures, and one "breakout" nominee from a critics'-favorite that didn't get Picture--Here, they have enough Pictures to choose the fifth-nominee from (in this case Tarantino), but if Pete Docter didn't make the Director nomination necessary to complete the sweep-trifecta, that's....disconcerting. ![]() Kind of expected it, though--They might still give Picture to Up and Director to Bigelow (or Cameron, but just to Cameron, and all that that implies), but for all the "Let's nominate Pixar!" mania, there might still be the technical confusion over just what an animation director does, and whether he can be credited as artistically responsible, or which of the two directors on it actually got the award.
