Default The Hurt Locker --- way overrated

Watched this movie and thought it was entertaining... sometimes slow development with the story but that was to be understood giving the content. But up for an Oscar, best movie of the year, not by a long shot.

Someone's a hater. I loved this movie. Definitely deserves at least a nomination for Best Film.

I wouldn't mind Inglourious Basterds winning, but the smurfs movie is better than the Minesweeper movie.

At least outside of the movie itself, Avatar carries some significance for movie history. The Hurt Locker will be forgotten by April.

It'll probably be forgotten before April.

In case anyone was wondering I voted for the third option.

It's the same thing over and over and over again with no character development AT ALL.

Worst movie of the year, and yes, that includes anything and everything done by Uwe Boll.

The Hurt Locker was great. For those who complain about it being tactically unrealistic, of course it is.....just like the majority of war movies are. If you want 100% realism, then forget even watching documentaries.....just sign up for the military. This is more about the characters anyway. Whoever thinks there wasn't any character development really needs to get a clue.

As for the Best Picture nomination, it won't win. Why? Because 12-foot tall Smurfs battling the "evil corporate invader dudes" to save their giant tree carries the message that most people in Hollywood Land love to see, compared to a war movie that contains no political agenda (which is a rarity). Oh well, we all know that this is much higher quality film making than that.

Because there wasn't any character development?

Character development would imply that the character has changed from the beginning of the movie to the end of the movie.

The main character ended the movie doing the exact same thing {in the exact same way} as he did at the beginning of the movie.

You're right, Avatar is much higher quality film making than Hurt Locker.

It's like comparing apples to $#!+ {Hurt Locker would be the $#!+ part of that equation just so you know}

If you readmy post, I said I thought it was a decent flick, but no where near good enough to be nominated for anything

I have still yet to see this and I feel like I'm going to be in your shoes. I hear everyone say amazing things about this and over-hyping the crap out of it. I hope I like it.

I liked the movie and thought it was good. One thing I did find interesting though was the reaction some people in the military seem to have had to the movie. I was surprised to see many one star reviews on Amazon for this movie which were almost all done by current or former soldiers. Basically their opinions were that the movie was completely unrealistic and many even felt the movie was disrespectful.

Maybe we should do one for every film that has been nominated for a best picture.

This is a great film btw...not my favorite of the year but in my top 5 for sure and yes much better than Dances with Avatar (might as well say that before the topic comes up).

* Up in the Air is by far the best film of the year. But it will be forgotten very soon as some have said.

Mesrine is best film of the year and yes this is totally over rated. It's still a good movie though.

Overrated? Well, I haven't heard anything about it from anyone who's seen it, only a little academy awards chatter on the radio. It's still totally worth seeing and easily among the best I've seen from 2009. The fact that the director is a woman amazes me.

Just finished watching it (slow Netflix, and would've been nice if they'd told us about it when it was in theaters)--
And the answer to the complaint of "Like, there's no plot!" is "It's a character study, Pauline Kael!":

Platoon had a plotless "Endless tour-of-duty" diary structure, but the message on that one was War Is Bad--
Here, Kathryn Bigelow, who specializes in stories of adrenaline junkies (or, "What if Patrick Swayze from 'Point Break' had been drafted?"), gives us a non-plot that says, in the opening title, War Is A Drug.
The other squad members think that Sgt. James is a complete psycho, and they may very well be right--Not everyone is cut out to prefer the adrenaline of risk and paranoia to the "boredom" of stateside home and family,
[Show spoiler]as we see at the end
.

Don't think it'll win the Oscar--it's one of those Good Third-Places--but wouldn't mind if it did.

I might be missing the logical step, but how does it being a character study lead to it being a great movie?

Character studies still have plots, otherwise there's not much to learn about the character, and it ends up being a pointless movie. Oh wait...
