Why would they rust? If it's away from water and not scratched all the way down to the metal there should be no problem.

There's humidity in the air unless you intend to keep it vaccum sealed for the rest of your life.

Most of us keep them sealed so there's no problem.

Also there should be some kind of clear coat to add gloss and to prevent any kind of paint failure. I'm sure it will hold up regardless.

Well, my Hurt Locker steelbook already has paint failures all over the place and it's not the result of handling. And since you keep yours sealed, you probably wouldn't even be able to tell if there was paint failure or small dents that are obscured by the plastic wrap for that matter.

What paint failures? Like there's dots of paint missing, or is it fading?

My Hurt Locker is not 100% defect free, but the paint looks good.

At the edges on practically all sides, there's signs that paint has faded in small spots showing the gray metal underneath. It hasn't happened to the other ones I have, but these things don't exactly have platinum finishes you know.

When they Rust? Ok here we go:

1. I don't take showers while holding all my Steelbooks
2. I don't submerge my STeelbooks in water to see how long they can hold their breathe.
3. They are all sealed and unopened so they are protected by 2 layers of plastic
4. I have had a few DVD Steels for a LONG time and they have yet to even look like they will rust
5. I doubt they would ever rust in my lifetime.
6. This is like saying you should worry about your Amaray cases melting

Well that's good. When you're a septuagenarian, you'll still have them in good shape to remind you of the good old days.

But what I don't get is why you would keep them sealed anyway? There are so many reasons to actually have unwrapped and too many to list. I just find it so stupid, they just sit there on the self and what do you do with them... nothing, yet they're supposed to be played.

You have your own reasons for why they should be opened and i have my own reasons as to why they should stay sealed. This is an on going argument that will never end. Open Steels or keep em sealed. So there is no point in starting it again. I've been involved in too many of these arguments and it's gettin old. So agree to disagree. I keep em sealed cause it's my choice and thats what i wanna do.

[Show spoiler]I especially keep them sealed so they won't rust.

Clone Trooper, it's obviously some minor manifestation of OCD, but the thing I don't understand about not opening them, as I mentioned already, is how do you know you don't have a dented steelbook since it's sealed? I have around 15 steelbooks (not really intending to increase that number) and already maybe ran into at least 5 where I thought it wasn't dented upon first inspection until I removed the shrinkwrap and actually examined it under different lights. So basically, these things have much higher damage rates than amarays. Unless ignorance is bliss, it's hard to reconcile the pscyhological need to have an item in pristine condition with not really knowing the exact condition of the item except that it's under two layers of plastic.

People have had their steelbooks rust before, tot. I know statistics (since you're applying the it hasn't happened to me, it can't possibly happen to anyone else mindset) and chemistry aren't your strong suit, but do a simple google search.

No they aren't- they are made to be PURCHASED.... what each of us do with them once we own them is up to each of us.

The dealer didn't sell you your car so you can speed in it- but I bet you do. Does he tell you how to drive it once you own it? I doubt it. You cant go around telling others what they are supposed to do with their purchases.

I just buy 2 versions. The US BD, and a SteelBook just to keep and display. My SB's are mainly my favorite movies. Bad habit.

Ya i'm always wishing my Chemistry skills were better when i'm buying Steelbooks. The first thing i say is, damn i wish i paid more attention in Chemistry class so i could be a better Steelbook buyer. You hit the nail right on the head. hahahaha.

I'm not sure i understand why your so concerned with whether or not people open their steelbooks or don't open them or buy steelbooks or don't buy them. It's up to each individual to buy whatever they want and do with it whatever they want. I'm not gonna lose sleep cause your sittin here tryin to tell me i should open all my steelbooks cause they are all damaged and i don't know it or cause in 2 weeks or 20 years they are gonna rust.

I buy them cause i like them and i keep them sealed cause I WANT TO. Period. End of story

Put a coat of car wax. That should help protect the paint finish. I'm not kidding either.
