Just to let everyone know again.. I will be weeding out owners that are NOT active on bluray.com. Like I stated, I'm avoiding all the scheduling issues on the other Madden leagues so we don't have problems going into Madden 2011. Hopefully this will be more organized than Madden 10.

March 23, 2010 - Another year and another Madden game is set to launch itself into the clutches of sports lovers and haters the world over. Whether you think Madden is nothing more than a rehashed version of its year-old self or you believe that it's the truest representation of your favorite Sunday pastime; EA Sports has one job to do when they set out to create the world's only NFL-branded title: to make the best damn football game people have ever seen.

For Madden NFL 11, the team at EA Sports' Orland-based Tiburon studio is starting the massive roll-out of improvements, tweaks and new additions by giving us a look into the re-designed catching intelligence that you'll feel and see when you get your hands on your copy in August.

As any diehard Madden fan knows, receiver artificial intelligence has been lacking for some time. Whether you're running an out route or a fade to the corner, problems popped up at every turn. For an out route, your receiver had little to no idea where the sideline was, so he'd consistently forget to get two feet inbounds or, if he did remember, he'd immediately go darting out of bounds instead of knowing to fight for extra yardage when a first down was close. As if that wasn't frustrating enough, making a pass to the deep-part of the end zone was often hit or miss. A real NFL player knows to get both feet down. Beyond that, they know the more finite rules of the game and they use those rules to make big plays. EA Sports is hoping that a new creation called the Catch Debugging Tool will help them address these issues and more.

Miles Austin on his tip-toes making a grab. Note the new facial capture that EA Sports did for this year's game.

The Catch Debugging Tool essentially allows developers to analyze and break down catch animations and the behaviors that lead to certain actions on the field. Aside from the miscues that I mentioned above, players in past Madden games seemed to have an incredible propensity for catching the ball and running the wrong way. Almost as though they were caught using turbo when running towards their own endzone. With the Catch Debugging Tool, EA Sports' Ian Cummings (creative director on Madden) told IGN that they've been able to get "frame-by-frame results of what catches best match the situation for all players involved as the ball is in the air." Cummings says that the end result for users is "a much larger variety of animations than ever before."

Not only will players recognize the boundaries of the field, but Cummings also said that they'd be fully aware of the location of first down markers. "We have specifically tuned and added support to make it so receivers wait for the ball on a curl and have awareness for the first down. Also, receivers will now be working to catch the ball in stride on crossing routes so they don't end up slowing down or losing yardage," said Cummings. He later conceded that receivers will occasionally lose yardage if it means coming back to the ball and avoiding an interception. I, for one, can live with that.

Boldin, complete with new Ravens garb, fighting for a ball over the middle.

But what about defense? It seems with all this newfound firepower for the offense, the defensive guys might have fallen by the wayside. Cummings assured us that wasn't the case, saying, "We never want to make it so the offense is too powerful, so we have really focused on giving the defenders the ability to go up and also knock the ball out in mid-air. We've added all new animations for mid-air collisions so defenders have an even better ability to get up with a receiver and fight for the ball. With recent changes, players will definitely play the ball more aggressively, but the elite guys are the ones who are going to be able to hang on to it." So while you'll see wide receivers like Larry Fitzgerald going up in traffic and coming down with an astounding grab, there's certainly the opportunity for defenders like Ed Reed to make you sorry you ever tried working the ball into the middle of the field.

It's always exciting when we first start hearing about new features and improvements to the classic Madden formula, and while better catching is something that we've heard before from EA Sports, it sounds as though they're finally putting an adequate amount of development resources behind one of finer points of football. We'll have much more on Madden NFL 11 as soon as EA Sports further removes the veil of secrecy. Until then, be sure to check out Ian Cummings' post on the Madden NFL 11 blog, scheduled to hit tomorrow.

Catch Tuning
by Ian Cummings 03/24/10 3:57 PM
Well it’s hard to believe, but Madden NFL 11 will be here before you know it! The development team here at EA Sports Tiburon in sunny Orlando, FL has been hard at work trying to put together the best football game in history (our goal each year). We started off the season with a video blog introducing you to some of the team members, along with their whiteboards. Since then, we have been focusing on many different areas in the game from presentation to franchise to online, but this week we wanted to talk about everyone’s favorite aspect of Madden NFL – Gameplay. More specifically, catching.

Please note: This is the first of many blogs we will release in anticipation of launch. In addition, our first major release announcement will come closer to the NFL Draft so stay tuned.

As developers, catching has always been one of the hardest and most frustrating areas of our game to tune because of the sheer amount of possibilities. When you start to try to account for all the different angles a pass could be coming in to a receiver along with the difference in his body position, it is always a difficult problem to solve. In years past, fixing catch problems has taken countless development hours to try to track down and address the issues. With that in mind, one of the first tasks we started addressing after we shipped Madden NFL 10 was to create a more user friendly catch ‘debugging’ tool. One of our talented software engineers, Kasey Keltner, created this tool which allows us to figure out why certain catches triggered, what other catches could have triggered, why some catches play more frequently than others, and helps identify angles where no animation is available. This tool has already helped us enormously by being able to see why certain things happen in Madden NFL 10.

One of the first catch issues we addressed was to force receivers to run through particular passes instead of triggering jumping catches. This was often seen on deeper passes like Streaks, Corners, and Deep Posts. Instead of slowing down and jumping up to catch a pass, a receiver in open space will try and catch the ball in stride now. These types of catches will only trigger, however, if there is not a defender in the path of the route or in a position to make a play on the ball. We want the Larry Fitzgerald/Calvin Johnson type receivers to really go up and fight for the ball and come down with spectacular catches if there is a crowd of defenders around them.

Another area of focus we have been working on is tuning the frequency for when “aggressive” types of catches can trigger. In previous years there have been situations where you could sometimes see a receiver playing a catch where he runs back towards the ball. These could sometimes be seen on Curl/Hitch/Smash type routes as well as Screen routes behind the line of scrimmage. There is nothing more frustrating than calling a 5-yard route on 3rd and 4 and having the receiver catch it moving towards the QB and get tackled for a 2-yard gain.

Well, this year, the receiver won’t play those types of catches (unless of course there is a defender between him and the ball). If you are running a 10-Yard Curl and the defender is behind you, the receiver will always be forced to match a ‘standing’ catch so he can try to backpedal into the defender for extra yardage. Also, we eliminated the likelihood that a receiver that is behind the line of scrimmage (e.g. WR or HB Screen play) would play a running, aggressive style catch if he is in open space.

Finally, we have gotten sideline and back of the endzone catches to trigger in the appropriate situations. In previous years we have seen some situations where a receiver tries to make a catch near the sideline without making any attempt to get both feet inbounds. This was most commonly seen on flat and out breaking type routes.

For Madden NFL 11, with the help of the Catch Debugging Tool, we have corrected all of our sideline / back of the end zone catches. You no longer have to be afraid of trying to squeeze that Deep Out or Goalline fade inbounds, as now the receivers have much more advanced AI to get both feet in.

Along with all of this work, we have added several new catch animations to the game from recent motion capture shoots with the goal of adding more variety and creating more authentic animations to match what you see on Sundays.

That’s all for this week folks. Join us next week for our live chat on Madden NFL 11 Catching Improvements. We look forward to answering any questions you all may have and don’t forget, more information about Madden NFL 11 to come.

madden 11 looks very UNREALISTIC

im not looking forward to ncaa football 11 as the players 'slide' all around the field and i have a feeling madden 11 will be the same

BACKBREAKER JUNE 1, if that isnt good ill go back to apf 2k8 as i have a feeling madden 11 will be the exact same as madden 10 (which was the same as madden 09, 08, 07, 06 etc)

Was interested in joining the league but had a few quick questions:

First, how do you guys schedule games? I ask because I need to know if I can fit it into my schedule.

Second, are you guys still doing any type of league for 2010 or only for 2011?

Finally, if for some reason I can't make a game here or there because of other obligations, will I get booted from the league or is it okay if I forfeit some games because of my other obligations as I think this might happen time to time because of school or work or other things.

I'm stealing Cruz's spotlight of answering questions. (((:

So far I know both of the 2011 leagues will be revolving on a one-week schedule, meaning that if the League begins it's first week on Monday, the week will advance the following Monday. If you're asking HOW to schedule games, then what I do is PM them on these Forums and also add them/PM them on PSN. (: I stalk.

Here's MaCruz's league's Thread:
https://forum.blu-ray.com/blu-ray-ga...ne-league.html

Several great teams are open, including the Eagles, Chargers, Patriots, etc. Just look for the teams with no name next to them and they're available. (Except the Colts; I think they're reserved for kroyal still because he had tech. problems)

Here's pillBOXhat's league that I co-commish:
https://forum.blu-ray.com/blu-ray-ga...sim-style.html

Here's our side-forum (to prevent clutter):
http://blurayfranchise.creaforum.net/index.htm

And here's our website:
http://blurayleague.webs.com/html/Home.html#

We revolve on a 1-week schedule, as well, but we aim every week to advance as quickly as possible (getting every game in) so we can hurry the season up and get to the Draft before '11 comes out. (:

And we all know that real life > Madden (except Cruz; he has no life and is obsessed with sucking at Madden. Sorry, Cruz, you're my new arch rival. : D) If you ever have any problems that will keep you from your game, just make sure you tell the Commishioner (this league's Commish is MaCruz) ahead of time so he can tell your Opponent.

If you have any questions regarding this league/'10 league, contact MaCruz. If you have any questions about the other '11 league/other '10 league, contact me or pillBOXhat. (: We'll be glad to help. And I hope I answered those right because I feel as if I went far off of what you were asking. ):

[[I'm really happy because I just won my first lobby game in like 10 years. I didn't get cheesed! ((:]]

Thanks Holly.

If you don't think you can commit to 1 game a week and check your PM's daily then maybe it's not for you. Bascially just read the 1st post of this thread and think about it.

I see, the ony reason I might not be able to commit to a game is if the person I am supposte to play that week's schedule conflicts with mine. I probably have to play most of my games on the weekends or at night after I get home from work and school. If there is a scheduling conflict on a week or two and I can't make it or my opponent can't make it will I get kicked?

Also thanks for the response Holly, I appreciate it. As long as I know I won't get kicked if I am forced to miss a game or two I'm all set to join, just purchased Madden '10 last night and will purchase '11 once it comes out. If it matters any I would like the Eagles for both seasons (contingent upon payment).

Thanks for all the responses.

For example. You join.

You scheduled your game with your opponent Saturday. Come to find out you can't play Sat, or even Sunday. Due date is Monday. Well, I'll just boot you for that week so your opponent can play the CPU. If it continues then I'll boot you for good.

Right now it's way too early to justify what's going to happen for the Online Franchise for 2011.

Eagles are taken. Here's the list of available teams...
Remaining available teams:
Chiefs
Rams
Seahawks
Texans
Browns
Lions
Buccaneers
Panthers
Cardinals
Chargers
Falcons

EDIT: Yes it's okay if you can't show up as long as you let me know. Others don't say a word so I boot them for good in the other league. School, and work is always first, and it's also friendly to let your opponent know including me that you can't make it.

lol alright, I feel better about it now. I have been wanting to join a league for very long now and am excited to start up. I'll definitely try to be at every single game and don't expect to miss any but just wanted to be sure of the rules before I committed. Are you guys still running a 2010 non-sim league also? Would like to get some practice in before 2011, I haven't played consistently since '08/'09.

Also, if somebody drops out of the 2011 for non-payment or something like it, can I be first up to get the Eagles? Thanks again for the response.

Forgot to mention, if for any reason I can't make it I will definitely let you know. On that note, what are the ways I can contact you besides on the forum?
