Dang, do you think VHS will be collectable one day long after the picture has degraded to near unwatchable levels?
I have Planet of the Apes from Magnetic Video Corp, who licensed a pile of Fox movies back in the late 70s. Later when Fox saw what a pile of $$ they were making, and that it was a long term lease, they bought the company to get them back

It was on high quality, heavy duty tape. It's held up better than a lot of the stuff I bought in the late 80s

I have about 400 DVD's that I will not be getting rid of because many of them will not be upgraded. I love my DVD collection and plan on building a great Blu-ray collection to complete it.............hell, who am I kidding? Most of us will never complete our collections as long as there are still movies to buy.

I have kept the essentilas like LoTR, Seinfeld, SW, Indy etc etc.
The rest of my standard dvd collection (1,500 +) I have sold on ebay in about 10 job lots.

I have cleaned out 3 cabinets of dvds so have no problem storing future blu rays. The money from the standard dvd sale will also fund future blu ray purchases. 2 birds with 1 stone .... if you know what I mean

I plan to keep my dvd's for right, especially since Universal is hd dud only and I have a few titles on SD. I have a lot of titles that have yet to hit Blu Ray so I will keeep my dvd's until they do come out on Blu. In the meantime I can watch them upconverted.

[QUOTE=tron3;169095]Dang, do you think VHS will be collectable one day long after the picture has degraded to near unwatchable levels?

I think condition is everything. The main thing to do there is archive it to DVD or Blu-ray (when it's possible).

I just bought the DVD of "Rembetiko" because it will be a long time before it's out on Blu-ray and I wanted a clearer image with the extra features. I noticed, however, that it is actually a different version of the film than what was released on VHS. The VHS version wasn't only cut for time, it is really a different version of the film. So I really need to keep both around for awhile. interesting release history there... When "Rembetikko" comes out on Blu-Ray, I'll be the first one to buy it, but I'll likely keep the others, too.

Default Wax Cylinders

There are still people who collect wax cylinder and wax disc recordings, and listen to them on old talking machines - gramophones (with the large brass horn). People still collect 78s and listen to them on Victrolas. These same people may also own a near state-of-the-art home entertainment system.

Again, condition is everything. (please see my other reply on this thread).

I had whiddled my 500 DVD collection down to around 200 earlier this year, before even getting into BD. Since getting into BD and realizing there was no turning back...I began selling the rest of the BD that were worth atleast $10 on Amazon and the ones not worth much, like only $1.00, giving them away to family and friends or selling them to local used CD/DVD record shops.

I have over 900 DVDs. If I upgrade my whole collection my wife will kill me in my sleep. Blu-ray is going to have to be saved for special purchases for me.

I was buying every "Tom, Dick and Harry" movie there for awhile when buying DVDs back in the day and I suddenly realized that I was not able to pay bills because of my DVD buying addiction. I gave myself some much needed therapy and realized that I should only buy a DVD if it was "special". That is a good plan you have there. I have noticed that with the advent of my buying of BD, I started falling into my old habit of buying every "Tom, Dick and Harry" movies again and I had to nip it in the bud. With the reviews here, thankfully, I have not purchased many movies that I do like and would like to buy, such as the Fugitive, as one example because of the poor transfer quality.

I do suggest, that you do start selling off your 900 DVD collection ASAP on Amazon.com before the market gets flooded with so many used DVDs on there and then your collection becomes for the most part...worthless.

I don't have much of a collection but I realize that the VAN has an LCD with built in DVD player, and I'll probably move my small collection into the Van.

I could definitely use some therapy. I just can't see me upgrading my whole collection. It will have to be on a case to case basis. For example, I watched The Devil's Rejects the other day, and the difference wasn't enough to make me upgrade.

Default The DVD Dilemma

Now that I'm going into blu-ray I look at all my DVDs with a weird feeling as well. Are they pointless to watch now? Which ones will I replace? The truth is that I have about 200 DVDs and since the blu-ray player upconverts them, then I'm not going to get rid of them. Plus, it may be a really long time for certain movies to come to blu-ray so I'm definitely not selling or throwing away any DVDs. I might pick up Casino Royale and Rocky Balboa on blu-ray and give the DVD versions I have to my dad because I know he'll watch them. I should be getting my blu-ray player this week at some point.

Mike
