Anime owns. But Anime remains niche in the general public, so instead of just having individual title Blu-ray wishlist threads that will inevitably fall off the Wishlist page, we can have one thread we keep adding our title wishes too. Good idea? I hope so.
Currently there are several, previously released on DVD, anime titles I would love to see brought to Blu-ray in the US market. 1. Steamboy. Probably the best Steampunk anything ever. IMO. Lush art direction, would really take advantage of Blu-ray video. I believe the DVD was put out by Sony Pictures, but I'm not sure if the title is still on their radar to get a re-release on Blu. 2. The Girl that Leapt Through Time. I'm kinda wondering why this didn't get an HD release the first go around, it didn't come out that long ago. 3. 5 Centimeter's Per Second/Anything by Makoto Shinkai. The animation on 5 Cen. and The Place Promised in our Early Days was jaw dropping in Standard-Def DVD. Just imagine it in High Def. ADV had the rights, but they recently had to restructure to become Sentai Filmworks. I believe they lost the rights to all of Makoto Shinkai's works at some point. So someone needs to get those licenses back. ASAP. 4. Macross Plus. Macross Plus is one of my 'Big Five' anime movies that really brought me into Anime back in 2001 (along with Ghost in the Shell, Akira, Royal Space Force: Wings of Honneamise, and The Venus Wars*) Though I prefer the four-episode OVA more, I'll take the movie in High-Def. Granted, I don't even think its on Blu in Japan yet. So this will probably be a while. Nevermind all the licensing issues Macross-anything has coming out in R1/A. *the only other of my 'Big Five' currently not on Blu-ray. And if it ever does get a Blu... I will literally eat a hat. Hell, I'll take an anamorphic DVD. I'm not picky. Besides that, Anime licensers seem to be dragging their heels on bringing Summer Wars over to the US. That really needs to be corrected, and soon. Same for Evangelion 2.22: You Can (not) Advance. So yeah, Anime on Blu-ray seems to be woefully lacking at the moment over all. There's a lot of great anime out there that can benefit from a high-def upgrade. |
