It looks as good as any version I've seen. It certainly blew away the beat up print I saw at the Alamo Drafthouse 3 years ago. That being said, it's still a 25 year-old catalog release of a low budget film, so I'd say the transfer is average at best.

The real reason to replace the HD-DVD with the Blu-ray is the lossless audio track(although very few scenes will likely show a noticeable upgrade) and the extras. The HD-DVD was barebones.

Yes, most likely the case I think...

I just looked up amazon and they have St. Elmo's Fire and About Last Night 2-pack Blu available for pre-order for $23.49 (release date June 1, 2010). Good deal than buying each individually ($40+ total for both) if you like both movies.

Not saying it won't be a port, just saying those are two reasons to think it might not be.
3. The recent passing of John Hughes.

Unless Universal did some major restoration it will probably have the same transfer as the HD DVD. All the studios use whatever elements are available; sometimes it turns out well, and sometimes just awful. Personally, I wish they did not release catalogs with crappy transfers, films like Clash of the Titans, Dumb & Dumber, Bruce Almighty, Tomb Raider, The Italian Job, Patriot Games, The Sum of all Fears, The French Connection are examples of crappy transfers that should have not made it to the shelves in their current condition.

High Def Digest has a pretty accurate account of the HD DVD's PQ on their website. If I remember, it was not an awful transfer. I've seen much worse.

I agree...and thankfully "Breakfast Club" isn't a cinematographic masterpiece to begin with (it is, after all, just a bunch of kids sitting around in Saturday school), so this will probably be one instance of where Universal can get away with being lazy, if they choose to be...However, if I recall correctly, the most recent DVD special edition came out after the HD-DVD version, and might have used a new transfer, unfortunately I haven't seen it, so I don't know...whatever the case, we can hope for the best, but expect mediocrity!

The film was edited by Dede Allen who just passed away this past April. Her credit include Night Moves, Reds, Bonnie and Clyde, Serpico, and Dog Day Afternoon.

I agree that BREAKFAST CLUB, like most John Hughes 80s films, has a naturally soft look -- and a subdued color palette as well. I have the HDTV version of BREAKFAST CLUB, which looks solid but not spectacular.

Basically I'm just hoping the BD isn't a step backwards. Something I thought was impossible until I viewed the comparisons of APOLLO 13 -- where clearly the HD-DVD is better looking than the BD.

You just never know with Universal...

I hadn't heard this...looks like I'd better go on over to the "Apollo 13" boards and see what's going on???

lol 25th anniversary....I am 26!! lol lol

On a more serious note, even though that I love this movie, I don't see why one would want to upgrade from the DVD. There isn't much about this movie that I can think of that would lend itself better in HD. Am I missing something??
