hm, thought Lionsgate gets their transfer-master from StudioCanal directly.

Maybe they use extra filtering or they have issues with encoding BDs correctly.

Thanks for the comparison, btw. Wonder how big the difference would look like

Note: Some of the supplemental features on this Blu-ray disc are encoded in PAL. Therefore, if you reside in North America, or another region where PAL is not supported, you must have a Region-Free player capable of converting PAL to NTSC, or a TV set capable of receiving native PAL data, in order to view them.
Also worth adding that if you have a Blu-ray/DVD ROM on your PC/laptop then that will always allow you to watch PAL material (watched on a PC spec monitor/TV). Assuming you're not region locked (although all ROM drives allow 5 changes of region I believe).

Or just get AnyDVD etc.

Definitely. It's not a direct port. Studio Canal have more than likely supplied the materials and Lionsgate have decided to do their own processing work on it. The UK disc has the grain intact.

I dig both films especially Raw Deal, ....back in the day the jump from video to DVD was massive & well worth the upgrade, but sadly after purchasing older movies on Blu Ray, while picture quality is slightly improved, unfortunately so is the film grain & other imperfections,... but saying that, Rambo First Blood Part 2 which is a 1985 film looks awesome on Blu Ray, but thats one of the rare exceptions to the rule.

For me, after spending the last ten years collecting DVD's, now to replace all my favourites the quality of the Blu Ray has to match or at least come close to reference stuff like Troy, Sin City, or Tears Of The Sun. When Blu Ray is good, its very good, but when older releases are bad, they are bad

Older movies filmed with the "grain" effect looked / look fine on DVD but I think Blu Ray is too intense for this type of filming, the begining of Black Hawk Down looks awful on Blu Ray, the grain is so overpowering

Basically, a slight PQ improvement (with flaws) isnt enough for me to part cash!

All in all, both Red Heat & Raw Deal are great Saturday night movies

Cheers

Welcome to the community

Actually, I believe you need to spend some time reading and educating yourself to understand why film grain is not an imperfection/flaw. From what you have written above it is obvious to me that you have very unrealistic, skewed expectations of Blu-ray.

Blu-ray is not a format that is to be used to achieve a digital, glossy look - which is something I have a feeling you associate with "quality". With other words, one of the greatest weaknesses of DVD was its inability to reproduce film grain, which resulted in that almost universal mushy look for countless of different films.

No offense, but you need to familiarize yourself with some basic concepts about film, quality, and style before you convince yourself that upgrading, and especially upgrading older films, is not worth it. On the contrary, it is older films that are the ones that could, in most cases, benefit the most from proper Blu-ray treatment.

Again, welcome to the community.

Thanks for the welcome friend

I do realize "grain" is not an imperfection & is a purposley produced effect, I just don't like the end result on Blu Ray, its too intense for me.
I do like movies filmed with a different look & feel, I dig the blue, yellow, green filter effect, such as.. Payback, Swordfish, & The Matrix, they look very polished & stylish.

You were very diplomatic in your reply, but I think you think i'm a bit of an idiot, but its cool

We will agree to disagree

Cheers

Hello again,

I am unsure why you assumed I thought you were an idiot. This is a very unfair statement. Had I thought so, I would not have taken the time to welcome you

Now to the point -- some of your perceptions and expectations about film and Blu-ray are shared by a number of mass consumers, which is very unfortunate. So, what I wanted to point out to you is that, like them, you seem to perceive quality in very limited terms, and equating it to a very specific look. With other words, film grain is not a purposely produced effect.

But it doesn't make me wrong because I don't like the look of it

I never said you were wrong. Again, what I am trying to do is urge you to learn more about film and the variety of different looks it could have. If you do, I guarantee you will be far less disappointed with your upgrades.

I think this wraps up our small discussion here. I look forward seeing you on the forum.

Apologies on my late reply in query to the UK Red Heat disc's region coding.

I'm happy to announce that it will in fact play on Region A equipment. Upon loading up the disc on my US PS3, you get the Optimum logo, a warning screen and then straight to the menu.

Of all the extras, only the trailer is strictly PAL, so I wasn't able to view that. So there ya go, hope that helps.
