That's my assumption. Zarkon even says something along the lines of,
[Show spoiler]"It's time the black lion return to its original paladin."

I'd imagine Zarkon's secret is something they'd hope the new paladins would never learn. It's likely a great shame. There's definitely some cool storylines they could write with dark secrets in Altea's past.

I'd imagine it's probably a simple case of power corruption though.

I assumed the same, but wish they could have at least mention something about it.
IMO the witch is prob the one that turned him bad, but I kinda wanted the season villain to have a more grey personality than a full on baddie.

That could be cool. I like the black/white good/evil dynamic right now. The show has this really great Saturday morning cartoon feel. I bet we'll get a lot more fleshing out of all the characters going forward. I think this season cared more about laying the groundwork and kinda gaining our trust.

I bet you're right about Haggar. The whole magic/Druid thing is still really mysterious.

Just binge watched the whole season and it definitely brought back some childhood memories, but it wasn't without its flaws. Loved the animation, voice acting and sound, but a few of the episodes were just lacking for me. I'd give it a 7.5/10. Looking forward to another season of it.

Finished up the season a week & half a go (work keeping me busy from being in here sooner). I thought it was well done, really feeling the nostalgia from my childhood. I was bummed when I zipped through the whole season & now we wait for Season 2? Netflix hasn't confirmed officially there will be more but they have to see the praise the reboot is getting. I'd give the reboot a 4.5/5 with Coran being the weakest character, not sure why the chose to make him goofy but other than that the writers did a superb job!

I'm amazed at how funny this show is. Sure, some of the jokes are misses but I've had plenty of laugh out loud moments.

I'm with you. There were several times I found myself asking, "wait, is this legitimately funny?" I was surprised how many laughs there were.

Seems like Coran's new direction is one of the downsides for some, but Rhys Darby is just funny to me. Maybe it's his voice.

Season 2 coming to Netflix:

Quote:
One of the best shows to debut on Netflix in 2016 was the animated sci-fi adventure series, Voltron Legendary Defender. The creative team behind the scenes did a fantastic job at bringing the iconic multi-part robot to life while also bringing its mythology, and that of its five (give or take) paladins, into a modern storytelling setting. The first season’s compelling story introduced the five heroes to old and new Voltron fans alike, setting them all on the path to defeating Emperor Zarkon (Neil Kaplan) and defending the universe. Breath-taking animation, humorous and heartfelt writing, and fantastic voice acting made DreamWorks Animation’s Voltron Legendary Defender a standout on Netflix this year.

And before the year is out, we’ll be getting more of it! The second season of the new Voltron series will air on Netflix later this year, continuing the teamwork-in-progress of the members of the Voltron Force and presumably seeing them deal with the huge twist revealed at the end of Season 1. It’s already one of my most anticipated series’ returns of the year!

The Voltron Legendary Defender creative team of executive producer Joaquim Dos Santos, co-executive producer Lauren Montgomery, and writer Tim Hedrick announced the Season 2 renewal over social media and during their Comic-Con panel before releasing a new image and poster for the upcoming season. Take a look at all of that below:
Season 2 is coming late 2016! #Voltron #SDCC16

— Voltron (@Voltron) July 21, 2016
The following cast members will also be returning:

Princess Allura – Kimberly Brooks (Ben 10: Omniverse, Justice League: War)
Coran – Rhys Darby (What We Do in the Shadows, Flight of the Concords)
Shiro, Black Lion – Josh Keaton (Green Lantern: The Animated Series, Transformers Prime)
Hunk, Yellow Lion – Tyler Labine (Reaper, Tucker & Dale vs. Evil)
Lance, Blue Lion – Jeremy Shada (Finn in Adventure Time, Batman: The Brave and the Bold)
Pidge, Green Lion – Bex Taylor-Klaus (Arrow, Scream: The Series, iZombie)
Keith, Red Lion – Steven Yeun (The Walking Dead, The Legend of Korra)

It's a shame Netflix doesn't seem to be in a hurry to put out good box sets of their shows, though.
Sure, they're always available to stream, but I still like having my own copy of my faves.

I finished Voltron LD season 2 last night. Overall, not a bad season. Lance and Coran are so cringe worthy, I have a hard time watching when they are on the focus of a scene. Some nice character development for Keith this season. The finally was awesome, great battle at the end with some fine animation. Nice double cliffhanger to lead into season 3.

I wonder if they will do what the original series did and push Shiro to the side so Allura can join the team in his place. Kinda seems weird but different the way it is.

I'll give a SPOILER warning:

I had some concerns about Coran early in season 1, but I've generally enjoyed the humor and his scenes. Lance never bothered me. If there's anything I would like to see, its more development for some of these characters. Like you said, it was nice to give Keith more of a spotlight, given he didn't get as much focus in season 1. But, even with the others, there's a lot of superficial stuff, and it'd be great to get deeper.

I'm thinking we will be seeing Allura join the team now. What's interesting is that with them going with matching colors, it'll probably mean Keith shifting to black. I think Allura was possibly already sporting colors that shouldn't make a shift to red to be red lion paladin too problematic.
But it makes things a bit trickier than in the original where the colors often weren't coordinated.

I had been hoping we wouldn't see Shiro die, so I'm hoping at some point he will be back in a meaningful way and not relegated to the background or sidelines when he reappears.

What I'm actually still most interested in seeing are flashbacks to the original team. I'd love to see what the dynamic was between Zarkon and the other paladins, learn who they were, what happened to them. I suppose, that could be its own series/spinoff down the road if they wanted to, and I'd definitely be down for that.

Lotor's arrival is obviously huge. I'd expect we'll be seeing a Lotor/Keith rivalry/conflict. Or, potentially, Lotor/Keith/Lance, if Lance still sees himself as a possible match for the princess and a rival of Keith's.

I think I'm more intrigued by Hagar being altean and potential revelations maybe tying back to the original team, and Allura and her father.

They have teased Shiro biting it pretty much from the start, so I imagine it'll happen eventually and Allura will join the team.
