Default Batman: Year One (Animated)

http://bluray.ign.com/articles/109/1096031p1.html

Quote:
It's one of the best Caped Crusader stories ever -- Frank Miller and David Mazzucchelli's Batman: Year One. And now it's being turned into an animated film.

Comics Continuum reports that Warner Home Video will be producing the movie as part of its DC Universe animated feature series. The site's sources indicate that Justice League: Crisis on Two Earths co-director Sam Liu will helm the film, though the studio would not confirm at this time that the film is in development.

Year One, originally published in 1987, tells the story of Bruce Wayne's early days as Batman after he returns to Gotham City from his years of travelling and studying abroad. This story runs parallel to that of the young Jim Gordon, as the future police commissioner joins the Gotham P.D. and becomes engulfed in the corruption of the city.

The book served in part as the inspiration of Christopher Nolan's Batman Begins.
Yet, another Batman BD, but I'm not complaining!

Oh god.... it's Miller Time! Frank Miller's Batman: Year One is painful.

Not as bad as some of his later Batman stuff, but still plenty of "charming" misogyny.

Plus they already mined it for Batman Begins. So we're gonna see a very similar story.

According to Paul Dini, highly unlikely. He said it and Hush really wouldn't work in a movie format.

Now that is a crime! The Long Halloween is my favorite graphic novel of all time. Hush is pretty great, too.

My guess for his saying this is a) that both story lines are extremely violent and b) they wouldn't fit into the 65-70 minute model.

In response to the first, Batman: Gotham Nights seemed to be more directed at adults than kids, so I think these could be adapted to fit into a PG-13 movie.

And as for the 70 minute model... PLEASE change that. I know it's more time and money, but it'll pay off in the end. So many of these animated films feel empty because of how quick they are. 5 minutes devoted to DC & WB logos and opening credits and then a long end credits and we're left with >60 min. Come on... be daring. Make it 90 min at least. Try it once on the most popular character. I wonder who that could be?

Good adapting can make almost any story work as a film. They just need to figure out what the core plot is, trim fat, and change things as necessary. Might be hard for them to keep it around 80 minutes or whatever it is they like to keep these direct-to-video animated films, but I bet they could do it. After all, they managed a good movie out of bits and pieces of Death in the Family and Under the Hood. Why couldn't they manage one centered around Hush? If Nolan fails to utilize Hush on Batman 3, they better do a Hush movie.

He can play a younger Bruce surprisingly well. If they let him.

I wouldn't mind seeing (read: hearing) a fresh take on it though.

Re: The Killing Joke: I've heard that Word of God is that there wasn't supposed to be implied
[Show spoiler]rape
, although I can see why some people might
[Show spoiler]see that sort of humiliation and assume that rape had happened off-panel
. It's still
[Show spoiler]sexual assault
, but it can all be sidestepped by it all happening off-camera, and by showing only characters' reactions (and maybe hearing Barbara as it happens). Best case scenario: people understand that Barbara was tortured just to show photographs to Gordon to drive him mad. Worst case scenario: the viewer believes that Joker had murdered her and was showing Gordon photographs of her dead body to drive him mad. Either way, it would fit in PG-13, I'm sure. They don't need graphic depictions of violence or nudity.

I would LOVE to see this... actually, there are a lot of Batman stories that I would love to see animated. Here's hoping Year One (can't wait) sells well so they make more.

I'm looking forward to this. Year One is my favorite Batman graphic novel.

However, I wish they'd do another Superman animated movie. I like Batman, but Supes is my fave.

You've got to be kidding me! It's one of the greatest Batman stories ever told. Yeah, ever Batman Miller has donce since TDKR's has sucked, but before is gold.

I'm pumped for this.

As much as I love Conroy, they need a younger sounding Batman for this.

How can Y1 be painful? It's one of the reasons Batman Begins was inspired by. Only Miller/Batman book I don't like is TDKSA sequel to TDKR but I love TDKR.

Seems like an odd choice, since Batman Begins, as previously mentioned, was taken panel for panel from this story in some places, but . . . as it's one of the best Batman books around, I'll be picking it up. I wonder if they'll have the cajones to finally do Dark Knight Returns and do it right. Although, I'd rather see it live action.
