They dont care...they didnt spend their hard earned money like you did so why should they even bother...in the end, if it breaks, its not theirs you know...unless its a REAL friend that does care then thats a whole other story...

Same here. I just don't get how so many people save such a problem handling discs?

What would you do?

Well first I would try claiming the disk, the finger prints might be the issue.

But, for the most part people know not to ask for my un-seen movies. I bought it, I am first (simple rule) to see it.

In this particular case, if you want it, just re-buy it. If she would have bought you a new one, she would have done it already. In the future just be more picky what you lend her.

I wouldn't try to force someone to buy a replacement if it still worked. In your case, with the disc skipping and such, I would definitely demand some sort of compensation.

They would also not be allowed to borrow any of my possessions again. Treat my stuff with respect and I will let you borrow (just about) anything. Ruin my stuff and why would I ever want to lend anything out to you again?

It depends on how good of a 'friend' he or she is. In this case, I would probably give the disc and case back to her, and tell her she can keep it since she ruined it. If she is a good friend, her guilt will inspire her to buy you a replacement, and if not...don't lend to her ever again.

I used to lend out DVDs to friends, but had too many experiences with items being ruined, so once I adopted BD, I stick to the No Lending Method.

Default Can they...uuummm, no!

People who know me think I'm "anal retentive" about my gear and discs. I kind of find it flattering in a way. Since they know that about me, they are aware of what they are getting themselves into and not bother asking. Ha!

In that kind of situation, I'd respectfully confront the one responsible for the damage. If they take responsibility and agree to replace the disc, fine; if not, I'd firmly remind them that until I tell them otherwise, their borrowing rights are suspended...period. Whether they damaged the disc themselves or not, it was done while the film was under their care, and as such they must be held accountable.

I don't lend out my Blu's for the primary reason of not having to deal with the condition they'll probably be in when they're returned to me. I've lost a lot of CD's/DVD's over the years due to friends mishandling them.

Over the past year or so a lot of my friends have bought a BD player, but I've been lucky that they haven't asked to borrow any movies. I'd probably have to let them since they are my friends, but I'd show them the bottom of the disk and say it better come back the same way it leaves.

I don't really have to deal with this since no one I know owns a Blu-ray player.

If someone did damage one of my Blu-rays, I'd ask them nicely for compensation.

The above is mostly true for me, not many of my friends have BD players and most aren't into collecting movies like I am.

I'd ask for a money/replacement movie or tell them I have a shovel, rope, and cement blocks in the trunk of my car, ocean is not a far drive

I wouldn't lend it to them in the first place. That being said, in your situation, I would just consider the lesson learned and go buy another copy.

I would first explain to the person that the item they borrowed was in brand new condition when they took possession of it and was damaged when you got it back, just to see what they say. A true friend would offer to replace it (or would have already replaced it). If they don't offer then insist that they replace it. If they won't replace it then I guess I'd have to replace it myself, but there would be no more loaning to that person.

Doesn't Singapore impose a vandalism act that sentences vandals to 3-10 strokes with a wooden cane for minor offenses and up to 3 years imprisonment for serious cases.

I'd impose the vandalism act... sorry buddy here comes the wrath of the cane.

I would inform the person of damage but not request they pay for it , I would leave that up to the said person to offer. I believe that they would know better to ever ask again and then I would replace the disc myself, lesson learned but I would prolly still let some close friends borrow a movie again, argghhh.
