The trailer for this film makes it look as hilarious as Withnail And I (same director) so i hope that it is! Johhny Depp is at his best when he is playing roles with a comedic element to them.

Saw it tonight and absolutely loved it. It was great to finally have another Hunter S. Thompson tale on the big screen headlined by Depp, and I'm really looking forward to being able to have a double feature of this and Fear and Loathing back to back. They're going to be great that way. Really hope that Hell's Angels finally moves in front of cameras, and I'm hoping that Depp will be a part of that one as well.

She is topless at one point, but you really don't see anything. It's shot in a way that's very subtle. Sorry to burst your bubbles, guys.

I discovered her back in 2002 or 03 at a Taco Cabana in Austin. I had 2 films in production and was going to cast her in one of them as the lead (she was 16 at the time and the only work she had done was one Target ad)... but then both projects fell through, she got famous, now she doesn't return my calls, LOL.

I still have her headshot lying around somewhere from back when she was 15-16.

Saw this on Friday and to me it played-out like a movie that was stuck in "Development Hell" for a while.

[Show spoiler]You are dropped-in to Depp's role. He likes alcohol. A lot. We get it. Along the way there are snippets of stuff you'd like to see more of, Eckhart pops-up basically just to introduce us to Amber Heard (and they never really go into him being nothing more than a wealthy land-owner type), one silly LOL bit pops-up from the trailer (car scene), some serious stuff happens around the newspaper, and then things just... end. With text-overs.

Not the best or worst movie, more of a missed opportunity. I'd rate it around a 3/5.

Opens this Friday in the UK, I am counting down the days. As a big Hunter Thompson, Depp and Robinson fan, I fail to see anyway I won't love this. Will report back Friday.

It earns 3 out of 5 from me as well.
But I don't think that's my definitive rating until I watch it again after its release on Blu.
I remember when I first saw Fear & Loathing at the theater, it didn't strike me the same way it did years later with repeated viewings.
With that said, this film wasn't as creatively crafted or as imposing with the imagination Gilliam had for Fear & Loathing. Also, Depp was is constant communication with Thompson during Fear & Loathing, and Benicio Del Torro was unrelenting in his role. Not to mention all the powerfully assembled cameos in Fear & Loathing along with Hunter S. himself really added great depth to the film.
Rum Diary didn't really have any of that magic.
But the Rum Diary did have a unique romantic element. It helped push an otherwise idle story along.

I very much enjoyed it. A good adaptation of an average book. I agree with the points raised regarding the ending, the whole last act could use a re-edit, and Robinson often struggles to balance the tone. Still, it's lovely to look act, and reminds me of a Whit Stillman film with it's gentle pace and dialogue driven narrative. To your average cinema goer I'd say it's a 3 star film, 4 if you're a big enough fan of the material/actors/director.

Also nice to see a decently budgeted film with just adults in mind, for once.
