I was getting ready to start masking for the ceiling painting in the basement. My wife asked me if I had to paint the entire ceiling or if I could just do a part in front of the screen. I had never considered that.

Obviously, the entire ceiling being painted would be the best. However, I am married and must consider my battles.

Would I get a good benefit if I painted a semi-circle front pillar to pillar (see gallery) that came out 4-5 feet or so?

Tom,

I would paint the area covering 5ft from the screen wall in between the pillars, you can then add some matching trim pieces around the 3 room exposed sides to finish off

Maybe I could build something similar to your masks for the ceiling in front of the screen? I haven't bought the paint and could return all the other supplies.

DAMMIT!! I hate getting ideas from this site. It will take me another two weeks to make a decision.

If the wife isn't keen to the painting idea not sure how she will feel about stuff being bolted to the ceiling but I am glad it inspires you to think about at least

If you had a way to get power up their easily you could build something that hangs from the ceiling with lights around the edge but in it (think empty box) that can provide non tv watching ambiance. and a nice focal point in the room

I think I might have figured out an easy way to test it. I can buy some velvet and frog tape it to the ceiling for testing. I would be able to change the pattern to see what works the best if at all. I don't think bolting something to the ceiling would be an issue and might be a benefit. If she ever decided to take it down, I would have a couple of holes to fill and touch up paint. It would be easier than painting white over brown.

I don't think it would be a waste of money since I could reuse the velvet for this project or for the blockout light project for the double door.

Resurrecting an old topic, sorry if that's a no-no but this is an interesting idea. Is it possible if one has a drop-ceiling to paint or buy dark or black colored ceiling panels that could go in front of the screen? Maybe along the entire border of a room in that fashion to keep it a uniform 2-foot border of darker color. Would this 2-foot buffer be enough room to absorb that reflection?

I would probably go out at least half the screen height, Just my observation (I'm sure there is a physics formula to figure out how much and how far out the light will reflect off the screen). So if the screen is 4ft tall then 2ft out with the tile.

So is there in fact different colored panels for drop ceilings? Like if I wanted to do off-white panels with dark brown panels at the walls to offset reflection that is possible?

Every type of panel I've never seen in a drop-ceiling has been white or off-white so I wasn't sure this was something that even existed or it would look horribly tacky.

I'm not sure to be honest, Armstrong probably does. However, I would personally buy a box of white ones and just paint them (and the metal pieces) or cover them in cloth so they are what ever color you'd like.

Just noticed your location, where in Ohio are you located?

I was looking last week and there are, in fact, several colors available. Unfortunately, they cost quite a bit more than white, so I'm just going to spray my white tiles black. I'll leave the track white for now, but if it bugs me, I'll paint it or mask it with black vinyl.

They're not cheap, but Ceilume has nice-looking drop ceiling tiles in a few different colors. I have their Stratford tiles in black for my still-under-construction dedicated home theater.

You're killing my budget here! Those look amazing and exactly what I'd like to put in.

When I was researching painting the ceiling, I read where several people had spray painted their white tiles black and nobody seemed satisfied with the job for two reasons.

1) The tiles absorbed alot of the paint and had a spotty appearance when done
2) After installation when the tiles got hit and pieces broke off, it revealed white spots.

I tried to find the thread listed but I couldn't. It might have been on the avsforum.

Thanks, I figured they'd soak in the paint, I was going to try a primer first and then paint a couple and see how it turned out. If it didn't work, I was going to laminate "Display Fabric" to the tiles. That would be more expensive than paint, but still cheaper than ceilume(that's where I'd seen the colored tiles before). Ceilume looks great, but not in my budget with the projector, reciever, blu-ray, screen, etc. Maybe in phase 2 when we get the theater seats to replace the sofas.

I wonder if just wrapping the specific tiles in a black cloth of some sort would work and not look ghetto? A thin yet dark black cloth that could be wrapped tightly and then stapled above where you wouldn't see the staples.
