Hmmm.......I'd say the original Psycho, The Birds, African Queen(Bogart and Hepburn are terrific in this), The Wizard Of Oz-just imagine what could be done with this, the older Disney movies-both live action and animated, they had some true classics, the original War Of The Worlds-I thought the new one was crap!, and many more I can't think of right now. Come on MGM, give us those classics! Actually a lot of the AFI's top 100 would look fabulous given the proper treatment they deserve. To those who wouldn't watch these I have this to say: Without these groundbreaking films and people like John Wayne, Kathrine and Audrey Hepburn, Alfred Hitchcock, and Orson Wells movies today wouldn't be what they are. Look at who people like M. Night Shyamalan site as influential. He wouldn't site someone like Hitchcock for no reason. To each their own and I for one will look forward to seeing these in glorious 1080p. On a side note Peter Lorre was the influence in Billy West for doing the voice of Ren and Larry form the Three Stooges for the voice of Stimpy.

The only way if they came out would be to buy an Hd Dvd player as these and many other monster classics are the property of Universal.

I wonder who has rights to the Hammer Horror versions these days. I actually prefer those versions to the classics.

I watched The Dirty Dozen for the first time today. I always consider myself a big movie fan, but then thinking about it, i realized I never watched a lot of the old films considered 'classics' by many. I took a bunch of them released on BRD and added them to my Netflix queue. Dirty Dozen happened to be one of the 'watch it now' titles on Netflix, so I watched it today. I really really liked it, and will probably buy it on Blu eventually. I hope I like some of the others as much as I liked this one.

I'd kill for Gunga Din or the Philadelphia Story on Blu-ray. The thing that pisses me off most about Warner's Blu-ray support, outside of the Matrix, is the fact that Adventures of Robin Hood is available on HD-DVD, but not Blu-ray. Hands down the best Robin Hood ever. And to any youngsters out there who dig Hitchcock, check out the Lady Vanishes and the 39 Steps. North by Northwest is my all time favorite movie, but those are the best of his British films and if you've never seen them they're worth a look. And to Sony, please stop teasing me with that damn snippet of Lawernce of Arabia and just finish the damn thing! I want it yesterday!

Not being condescending to young people about Lady and 39, I'm 25 and I've met 2 people my own age who have ever seen them and they were film students.

Another thing about old movies which no one has mentioned is that stars were STARS!

They were bigger than life, and for the most part, they either had, or pretended to have class. Leading men were leading MEN, Cary Grant, Tony Curtis, Richard Burton.... and the WOMEN! They would oooze sexuality without ever taking off a stitch... and you didn't have the media doing everything in their power to tear them down, they were icons for God's sake!

Back in the day it was all about creating a fantasy on film, now its about creating pseudo reality in CGI

Oh, you kids!

There are a helluva lot fewer movies that are before my time than probably most or all of you. In fact, there may be more silent films than sound ones. I don't know, I haven't counted.

My list would exclude certain films like The Wizard of Oz, Gone With the Wind or even Casablanca. Too new.

I've always had a passion for the old Universal monster pictures (yes, they are in BOTH black & white AND mono! In fact only some of them would apply. Let's see. . . the original Dracula, Frankenstein, Dracula's Daughter, and The Bride of Frankenstein would all qualify. The rest, like The Wolf Man pictures and House of Frankenstein are too recent to make the list.

Some of the early Clark Gable / Claudette Colbert (you're thinking "who???") pictures like It Happened One Night would be on the list. Most of the Charlie Chaplin films, Harold Lloyd comedies, and the early DeMille's, etc. are all good.

Unfortunately, most or all of these (at least in the Universal catalog) probably won't see the blu light any time soon. So, I quess I'll just have to continue upscaling my DVDs until then, and just watching the more contemporary offerings on Blu-ray.

I'm feeling (slightly) younger already! I'm merely as old as the original, Gene Barry version War of the Worlds. Does that make me a "kid"?

Default movies then were movies

Movies from the thirties -sixties were real classics whether B&W or color.
They told a story which held your interest. The actors and actresses were dedicated professionals not like the fly by nights we have today. The movies didn't need sex, violence and special effects to draw crowds or hold your interest. Some of my favorites:

Lawrence of Arabia , A Tale of Two Cities
Doctor Zhivago , Marie Antoinette (Norma Shearer)
The Egyptian , Treasure Island
The Robe , Song of Bernadette
Demetrius and the Gladiators , Cleopatra
A Man For All Seasons
Becket
The Lion in Winter
All About Eve
Diary of Anne Frank
Ben Hur
King of Kings
Greatest Story Ever Told
The Ten Commandments

MOST OF THESE ARE SHOWN ON TURNER CLASSIC MOVIES & FOX MOVIE

I haven't heard of some of those listed, but The Egyptian Treasure Island and
The Robe Song of Bernadette sound particularly interesting.

I like quite a few movies that were "before" my time. I realize that I'm probably in the oldest quartile of members here. So, some of the movies I like are... like... really old. I like a number of the Hitchcock, Kubrick, Chaplin movies. Movies of the WWII genre (The Great Escape, Bridge over the River Kwai, Where Eagles Dare, The Dirty Dozen), old comedies (Laurel and Hardy, The Three Stooges, Pink Panther - and some of the other Peter Sellers stuff) also interest me. I'm sure there are more... but can't seem to remember... with this advancing age and all...

I wonder if The African Queen will ever come out on DVD or Blu Ray...isn't it like one of the only movies on AFI's top 100 not on dvd?

With "Jazz Singer" (no, not the Neil Diamond version ) announced for October, African Queen is officially now the only AFI Top 100 ('96 List) not on DVD.
(Although IIRC, of the '07 list, "Sunrise" was a brief studio special-order and never hit mainstream shelves.)

So, here's your challenge, Gamer-Bois:
Just how many of the '96 and '06 AFI 100's (even if on SD) do you know?
Both-list comparison
Try them, you'll get a guarantee they won't hurt--Consider it like getting an edge on the Blu-Fan SAT's, before some HD fan brags about "The Searchers" again...Doctor-recommended! Amaze your friends! Show them how Peter Lorre really does sound like Ren Hoek!
Yes, some of them are in "that old 30's B/W, like they show on Turner Movie Classics", so it's obviously the fault of Really Old People...But let's see how much YOU know, and how much you don't know that everyone else already does!
They're the ones buying the darn DVD's in the first place, while you're breaking high score on Guitar Hero 2.

I'm up for it! City lights and Sunrise are the only two I've not seen. Indeed, I own the preponderance of titles on DVD. What's Guitar Hero?

Non-AFI 100, it's hard to believe Sitting Pretty isn't on DVD.

You have made my list of "Truer words are seldom spoken."

I wish it was just about creating pseudo reality in CGI. It's more about seeing which no talent skank ***** gets the most attention from being a rich bottom dwelling scum of society. Notice how "talent" today is often derived from the bratty (and bastard) children of a lesser generation of talented classic actors? She took her clothes off, put her in a movie. She is full of controvery, that will attract viewers. He is a homosexual....

Everytime I see a classic actor die I become a little sadder, even if I was never a fan.
