You know George Lucas often reminds me a lot of Steve Jobs...they both like money!

If George truly cared about his fans, he would restore the OT!

Long as the 6 films are in one awesome boxset, im happy. I'm happy with the 97 releases & 04DVD changes.

BIG respect lost to GL for making us wait this long. Kicked the fans to the side like trash.

I can't see Lucasfilm putting the original 'laserdisc' versions of the films on BD in any form, they'd look horrible. Have there been many letterbox movies on blu anyway? I don't understand why he thinks the process is so expensive Disney do it the James Bond's have been done. Why not make a new company Lucasfilm-Remastering and charge other filmmakers for the service? I'm sure they had to restore the original versions to make the special editions in the first place not all the scenes were altered it can't be all that bad lol.

I'm all for director's cuts but give a chance with the theatrical versions. If Lucas gives us the original theatrical editions he can change Yoda into Kermit the Frog in the special editions and I wouldn't bat an eyelid!

Well said.
The process is to expensive... for Georges Lucas.
As you said Disney and Warner spend lot of money for classics movies.
That's only a question of $$$$ with Lucas.
If he really have any respect for Star Wars fans he will restore the originals movies in HD.
But he won't.

The trouble is, to GL the original cuts are unfinished versions of his films, and he doesn't want to release unfinished films, so he won't release them, regardless of whether or not people want to see them.

I think he's half lying and half telling the truth when he says it's expensive to restore the, because it probably is very expensive since the original cuts haven't been restored for along time, meaning a lot more work needs to be done, but it's not as bad as he makes it sound. Whereas the Special Editions and the 2004 Editions are easily available and ready to be released in HD, and that's why the original cuts won't be on the Blu-ray, because they're not available in an HD source.

GL did say he is working on the original cuts, and I'm inclined to believe him, because he knows that if he does restore them then it'll be worthwhile, since so many will buy them. My theory is he'll release the original trilogy on Blu-ay about three years after the Saga set, or around the time of the 3D theatrical releases.

I'm personally not bothered the originals aren't being included, because I've never had any issue with the edits or the prequels, I just enjoy Star Wars for what it is - fun, easy-going entertainment.

I can't see how money is the issue, just Lucas. He just says that. If it really was just money, and Lucas was being super tight with his billions, I bet all the fans could raise what was needed.

There are endless arguments for and against, but all the additions, subtle and otherwise just ruin it for me. I'd go so far as to say I won't pick up the blu-ray editions if they don't include the theatrical cuts. I mean Lucas even shoehorned in Jar Jar Binks into Return of the Jedi (5min41s onwards in this video)

You are having a laugh? The industry is trying to make us go 4K/8k kit in 2011, don't you think Star-wars will be modified to look even better than 1080p.

Looking forward yes but another year out?? no

Any newbie asking whether their will be a 3D version yet

Is Lucas not releasing 3D versions of the 6 films in 2012, I'd guess 3D Blu-rays would follow.

I take your point and agree with you to some extent, in that I' not sure it'll actually hinder my personal viewing experience that much, BUT I don't agree with what Lucas has stated on either the restorations on that they were 'unfinished'

I get that it's much easier and cheaper to put out the 2004 editions because they 'exist in an HD' source... digitally HD, I'd assume. But the originals were shot on film, which is more than HD, and the lack of availability of an already existing digital HD transfer doesn't stop the aforementioned companies like Disney or Warner or whatever from doing a decent restoration from the film elements. Perhaps some of the film elements are damaged, or hard to find, or something... I get that it might be more difficult than some other films... but with Lucas' resources it shouldn't be impossible or cost prohibitive. I mean, I've seen loads of restoration documentaries on various Blu-rays of old films (The Red Shoes springs to mind) where it shows you the damage on the original film (like scratches, mould, faded or inaccurate colours), and they're still able to restore it and make it look brilliant.

As for him feeling the originals were 'unfinished' well, quite frankly, that's rubbish. They were finished when he released them in the 70s and 80s, and I'm of the opinion that when an artist releases their creation to the public they have to relinquish a symbolic ownership of it as well, because the public are the ones consuming it and often, of course, loving it. Tinker with it later if you want, but don't just say (at least twice) 'those films you fell in love with, well, they weren't finished before, THESE are the finished ones LOVE THESE INSTEAD' and try to bury the originals by rendering them only available on obsolete technology and in bad quality. George Lucas's technical ownership of the franchise be damned, I don't see any ideologically justifiable reason for not including the originals as well.

But then, I AM speaking ideologically here and, for better of for worse, I grew up on the '97 Special Editions. I haven't even seen the 2004 special editions (been saving watching them again for BD), so who knows how much it'll actually bother me at the end of the day... I'll let you know in a year's time!

I personally love the prequels and I wasn't dissapointed with any of them, and I also like the special edition OT trilogy. Fair enough if people want those in an HD transfer, but I'm not bothered. It'll be a day one buy for me, AOTC and ROTS will look amazing on Blu since they were filmed in HD. ^_^

And the others were shot on film, so they'll look spectacular as well.

It will be the other four films that will look the best as they were shot on 35mm and will therefore have much better resolution and depth than the digital format Lucas used for AOTC and ROTS. Those two films will probably be the least impressive, at least as far as the live action is concerned. Remember - 35mm > HD

Not interested in the prequels. Watched I & II, thought they were bad enough, never got round to seeing III.

I'll wait for the IV, V, VI on Blu-ray by themselves. Even if it means waiting a long time.
