So you are saying the review page is wrong? I suppose that is possible. The guild you linked to talked about the proper aspect ratio for Vistavison movies in general, but what about this specific movie? Why director was filmiing it, what ratio was he filming it for? That's the question. If 1.85:1 is the correct ratio, why isn't it on the Blu-ray that way? That is another good question.

also--from wiki
"White Christmas was intended to reunite Crosby and Fred Astaire for their third Irving Berlin showcase musical. Crosby and Astaire had previously co-starred in Holiday Inn (1942) (of which 'White Christmas' was a partial remake)
like I said, it has some similarities, but it is not the same story. Bing Crosby and Danny Kaye do not fight over the girl in White Christmas, also isn't about Bing Crosby running an inn that is only open on Holidays and White Christmas is the only song both movies share.

If the format was intended to have a flexible aspect ratio, then the filmmakers probably made the movie with that in mind.

Much like, I might add, Super 35 mm, which can be composed to either 1.85:1 or 2.35:1, as the director intends the picture to be.

According to IMDb, WC was released in three aspect ratios: http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0047673/technical

As for Perspecta, it was commonplace in the 1950's but it was not a true stereo format.

The fact that studios are using 5.1 to render mono tracks will not prevent them to sound like mono, unless they use some sort of pseudo-stereo processing algorithm.

I haven't seen any advertised sales on this title, so I just bought mine through Amazon (along with "It's a Wonderful Life"). It may be on sale closer to Christmas, but I didn't want to wait.

Wherever you can find it?

Actually though I was quite surprised, both of my local Best Buys, and my local Target had 0 copies of this today. I was going to just order from Amazon originally, but figured I would just grab it while picking up TS3, I was wrong. Now, I'll have to order from Amazon anyways. If you are looking to pick it up this week, you may end up having to order it, too. On the plus side, I think Amazon has it the cheapest ($19.99).

People have been claiming that White Christmas is a remake of Holiday Inn for a long time. I would say it's more accurate to say that White Christmas was inspired by Holiday Inn. Certainly they have some similarities:

1. Both have music by Irving Berlin.
2. Both star Bing Crosby.
3. Both feature an inn in New England.
4. Both feature the song White Christmas.

However, the plots have nothing in common. The actual stories are not even similar. This is not a remake.

And here's the big difference in my book: White Christmas is a feel good, warm and fuzzy holiday movie, while Holiday Inn is not. In White Christmas, the only tensions that arise are from misunderstandings. In Holiday Inn, there are deliberate attempts to betray, mislead, connive and downright stab their "friends" in the back. Holiday Inn has some great song and dance routines and an interesting plot, but it is not a feel good Christmas movie.

One last thing. The black face number in Holiday Inn is just plain uncomfortable to watch. I understand that it's a product of its time, but that doesn't change the fact.

On to the Blu-ray of White Christmas...

I'll watch the DVD this holiday season and see if it annoys me enough to feel that I need to upgrade. If I have a movie on DVD already, I pretty much have to find something that annoys me before I consider upgrading.

My COSTCO had it for $18.99 and it included 8 free holiday song downloads.

Best Buy did not even have it in stock.

Both CCBB and SOM are $18.XX.

White Christmas is $20 as some members have posted. It's $24.99 at Best Buy and Target.

I'm tempted to get CCBB at $13 now that you mentioned it the other day.
