Walt Disney's Japanese Home Video division are producing Ghibli's discs, correct? I bet the US versions of Nausicaa and Laputa will probably have the same transfers and the same audio tracks, plus maybe a lossless version of the English 5.1 dub. But this might be tricky for Nausicaa because on the japanese version the movie took up 40 GB of space, and who knows how much that lands of ghibli thing takes in addition to a possible lossless english track. If they do rework Nausicaa, I would love them to just tinker a little with the colors to make whites look less pink.
When the US release for Laputa finally rolls around, I wonder if they will include both a lossless tracks of the original and the newer orchestral score. Ideally I would like both along with the japanese lossless 2.0 track. Last edited by j_Diz; 01-04-2011 at 03:44 PM. |

This arrived today. It's very PINK!...maybe thats the La Puta side of things? I love the Ghibli films, but I'm not one for listening to Japanese audio and having to read subs (call me lazy). The one disappointment is that this set does include the Disney audio track, however its contained in the Special Features section of the disc and contains a mandatory Japanese sub which can't be turned off (to my annoyance but I'm sure I can live with it) Maybe if I learned Japanese it won't be such a problem...but until then that is my only grievance with this set (however minuscule it might be). Other than that the picture quality is amazing IMO but I'm sure there are some who will disagree.

That kind of sucks about the forced Japanese subs on the English track. When I listen to the dub it is usually because I want to take in the entire picture image without having to read anything at the same time. The Japanese characters are not too intrusive over the image?

Not too intrusive no. It seems strange that they have decided to do it this way for Laputa, but Nausicaa and Yamada's have separate English audio tracks. Can't say I'm completely in the know about the general business side of who own the rights to what with these films. maybe that's the case with Laputa.

You can turn the subs off in the English audio version by pressing the Select key (not the usual pop-up menu key) to bring up a pop-up menu. This menu has the option to turn the subs off. First choose the rightmost sub-menu and then the leftmost option and they are turned off.
They can't be turned off directly with the remote, must use that pop-up menu to do it. |

Great news about the subs, thanks to kannisto! I am on the fence about importing still, it is a very expensive purchase but on the other hand I like showing my support for ghibli products.

![]() Went into my account and took a closer look and you're right, it was sent out on the 23rd. My own mistake as I was going with the order date. Silly me. ![]() Well, at least I now know the package should be en route! |

Finally received mine today. I am very satisfied with the picture and audio quality (though I am not a crazy nitpick). This is my definitive version as it includes the Cantonese dub (originally watched the movie in Cantonese as a child, though this is the newer DVD dub, not the one I watched as a child), and the English dub with the updated soundtrack. I will put up photos shortly.

However, I DO have one question about the dub track. When Disney first dubbed this film back in 1999, there was a considerable amount of additional lines. The pirates, for instance, get to bicker more, particularly in the scene where two of them are searching for Sheeta in the clouds (Henri, Andy Dick's character badgers Charles/Shalulu, Mike McShane, saying "Mom is gonna be mad at you! I'm not the one who let her get away!") and commenting on the brawl with Pazu's boss (Stand back, he'll pop your buttons!) I heard from a source that all these extra lines were removed for the BluRay version of the dub. Can someone confirm this? |

"I love the Ghibli films, but I'm not one for listening to Japanese audio and having to read subs (call me lazy)."
Why should anyone call you lazy for preferring the English versions of these movies? To me that is absolute nonsense. Granted, there IS nothing wrong with watching it in Japanese, but to say that you shouldn't even watch the dubs is just heresy. Especially when all of them have excellent to good performances. They're not perfect, but they're certainly not bad and don't harm the films in any way. This is one of my favorite movies to watch dubbed. Evil Luke + Skinner + Cummings + Hisaishi's rescore = FTW. |

The English dubs are pretty good, sometimes the Japanese definitely seems a bit better especially considering that miyazaki directed the voice actors himself, but not having to read a film while trying to take in the imagery is a point in favor of the dub.
Maybe this is just a rumor, but I swear miyazaki said he prefers the French dub of porco rosso and I recently watched it and the frenchtrack was pretty excellent. Given the setting of the film, I think it probably is the best. |
